We carried out an unannounced visit to the care home. This was done by one inspector over a period of three hours. We carried out the visit to monitor compliance and sampled a number of records including assessments, care plans, staff recruitment and training records and the complaints record. We looked at two peoples files including assessments and care plans. These people had commenced with the service since our last visit. We found that the care home carries out assessments before the service begins and that care plans had been generated. The assessments and care plans were detailed and described the care needs of the individuals and how they should be met by staff. Care plans had been reviewed regularly. We spoke to both individuals whose comments were generally very positive about the service they receive. There is a robust recruitment procedure in place and we found the service had carried out all pre employment checks as required. We looked at staff training records and found that new staff complete induction training along with mandatory training we would expect to see care staff undertake when working in a care home. We received three completed surveys from people who use the service. All respondents told us they received enough information to help them decide if the home was the right place for them before they moved in. They also told us they receive the care and support they need and that staff are available when they need them, they said staff listen and act on what they say and that the home make sure they get the medical care they need. One person told us that sometimes the home arranged activities that they can take part in, and two people told us the home usually arranged activities that they can take part in. Two people told us that they usually enjoy the meals at the home and one person said they usually like the meals at home. All three told us there is someone they can speak to informally if they are not happy and two people told us they knew how to make a complaint, the third person told us they had never had to make a complaint. Two people told us the home is usually clean and fresh and one person who said the home is always clean and fresh. We asked the question what does the home do well? these were the replies we received; The restaurant is excellent Much help provided for special occasions e.g. birthdays, Christmas etc Excellent keeping relatives informed/involved I am very happy here, happy as we are The staff do the best they can for us. I have never needed to make a complaint. We have everything we want. Three relatives completed and returned surveys to us two people told us they always get enough information about the care service to help them make decisions while one told us
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 usually they get enough information about the care service to help them make decisions. Two respondents told us they feel the care service meets the needs of their relatives while one person said sometimes the care service meets the needs of their relative. One person told us they are always kept up to date with important issues affecting their relative, one person told us usually and the third told us sometimes. Two people told us that the care service always gives the support to their relatives that they expect or agreed while one person told us sometimes the care service gives the support to their relatives that they expect or agreed. Two respondents told us that they feel the care workers have the right skills and experience to look after people properly while one person told us they thought usually the care workers have the right skills and experience to look after people properly. Two people told us the care service supports their relative to live the life they choose while one person told us they didnt know. All three respondents said they know how to make a complaint about the care provided by the care service if they needed to. We asked the question what does the service do well. These were the replies we received, Caring staff, being able to chat to managers. Im hoping that I have a good relationship with staff who treat every individual as their own with dignity and respect. My mother enjoys her meals and overall is fairly content Treats individuals with respect, dignity at all times taking into account their individual needs. Welcome contact from family and friends in all aspects of the care and discussions. All staff friendly and easy to approach. Gives a homely and caring environment which Im happy from my mother to live in at all times, peace of mind knowing she is cared for 24/7. We asked the question what could the service do better? these were the replies were received, My mother has memory problems which often means she forgets that I have visited. It would be helpful if she could be reminded when we last visited, as she gets quite upset and telephones saying we have not visited. A little reassurance by her carers would be helpful. We regularly have to clean the toilet ourselves with bleach, as apparently the home is not allowed to use it. At busy times more staff would be beneficial Eight staff completed and returned surveys to us. All of them told us they are given up to date information about the needs of the people they care for support for. All respondents told us that their employer carried out pre employment checks before they started work and that their induction covered everything they needed to know when they started work. From personal care to nutritional needs and cleaning to promoting independence. All staff work well together to deliver the best we can. We asked the question what could the home do better? these were the replies we received, Provide more activities and entertainment service users Give a better hand over I think in all care homes time is always issue and that there is lots to do in that time we have.
