Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection in March 2009. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us numerical information about the service. Any surveys returned to us by service users and others with an interest in the service. Any information we have received about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and any action taken in response to requirements or recommendations made within the previous inspection report. What has this told us about the service? The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA), returned by the manager, provided current details about the home including areas where action has been taken to make improvements. The completed AQAA notes no specific improvements having been made in direct response to resident feedback since the last inspection, beyond indicating that a previous social event might be repeated in response to positive feedback from residents, and that residents were consulted about the home getting a dog. Other changes reported since the last inspection include ensuring that any needs for aids or equipment, identified at assessment, are addressed prior to admission; that trial visits are now documented in the care plans along with the decision to confirm the offer of a permanent place at the home. Residents have also been encouraged to be more active and involved in their care and their families have been invited to contribute to care plan decisions and to the provision of photographs and other personal items for residents rooms. The AQAA also indicates some ongoing improvements to the physical environment and to the homes facilities, through the completion of a utility area. A range of refresher training has been provided to staff over the past year and some new policies have been implemented. The AQAA indicates few specific planned improvements for the future, other than ongoing maintenance and improvement in areas which would be expected, such as maintaining training and promoting good practice. There were no requirements arising from the last inspection. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Since the last inspection, appropriate notifications of some reportable events have been made to the Commission, as required. The completed AQAA indicated that no new complaints had been received about the service in the last twelve months. No complaints have been received by the Commission, for forwarding to the service, over the same period. There are reported to have been no safeguarding referrals relating to this service since the last inspection. The Commission has not been made aware of any safeguarding matters over the same period. The AQAA indicates a service which consults residents through regular service user meetings and an annual quality assurance questionnaire, (also sent to relatives). as well as by listening to residents on a day-to-day basis. The views of relatives are also sought. Our judgement is that the home continues to provide a good service to meet the needs of residents, and provides good outcomes for residents. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will not change our inspection plan, and will undertake the next key inspection by the 19th of March 2011. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of residents Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information Document Purpose: Author: Audience: Further copies from: Annual service review CQC General Public 0870 240 7535 (national contact centre) Our duty to regulate social care services is set out in the Care Standards Act 2000.
