What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The last Inspection report dated 15th September 2008 showed: The home provides good and detailed information for prospective residents. Comprehensive pre-admission assessments are carried out to determine whether the residents needs could be met. There is a good rapport between the staff and the residents. It was observed and confirmed by residents that staff are kind, patient and respectful. Residents said they liked the food, which is of a high standard and with a food variety and choice. On the day of the inspection, there were pancakes for pudding with strawberries and raspberries and homemade cake for tea. Good and imaginative activities are provided Monday to Friday by an activities person who knows the residents well. Visitors are made welcome in the home and encouraged to join in with activities and special occasions. Staff are provided with comprehensive mandatory and specialist training which include Dementia care and safeguarding vulnerable adults. The company has its own trainer who was present at this inspection. Care plans have been further improved. Those for residents with dementia and mental health needs are being further updated. Care plans are informed by a range of risk Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 assessments, which are regularly reviewed. The Company must ensure that there are sufficient numbers of care staff on duty to meet residents needs in a timely manner. Many residents stay in their rooms due to their dependency as well as by choice. Staffing levels were discussed at length with the manager and group manager. The kitchen was reviewed by the Environmental Health Officer during January 2007 and it was then recommended that it be refurbished. At this inspection it was noted that the kitchen has not been refurbished but some new cupboards have been provided and tiles repaired. Evidence from AQAA (Annual Quality Assurance Assessment) and other information showed: The home did send us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA). The AQAA along with other information and intelligence contained sufficient information to contribute towards making a judgement about the frequency of inspections. The AQAA detailed a range of improvements that had been made to the home and to the delivery of care to the service users. What the home considers it does well The AQAA states it maintains a high standard of care and have a caring and dedicated team of staff and has a happy and homely atmosphere that supports the service users. What the home considers has improved over the last 12 months Care plans and documentation has been improved. Homes maintenance programme is ongoing. The home has some new nursing beds to meet residents needs. Additional staff are now on duty during the day. What the home considers it could do better. Decorate the exterior of the home, and improve the garden. Increase activities and arrange outside trips for service users. Any notifications received on evidence received by the Commission have been dealt with appropriately with the best possible outcome sought. In the view of the completed AQAA and intelligence received we do not propose to change the current inspection schedule. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? In the view of the completed AQAA and no negative intelligence we do not propose to change the current inspection schedule. We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 15th September 2010. This Annual Service Review will not change the quality rating for the home. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
