Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual review. This included - The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. (DataSet) Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. The previous key inspection. Information supplied to us from the National Relationship Lead for CHOICE Ltd. What has this told us about the service? At the last inspection the home was rated as a good service. We received the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) in September 2009. This provided detailed information about the service and how they had improved since the last inspection. The AQAA stated that people were offered choices in their day to day lives, had regular house meetings and were being involved in Regulation 26 visits to the service and the organisations Quality Assurance Programme. As a direct result of feedback from people in their annual surveys, they had been involved in the recruitment and selection of staff, helping out at interviews or meeting new staff informally. The AQAA indicated that positive communication was being promoted using photographs, symbols and sign language. Documents were being produced using photographs and symbols. Staff were actively promoting and respecting peoples diversity supporting them to follow their religious or spiritual beliefs. The AQAA stated that a person centred approach to care planning continued to be implemented in the home and that people continued to have access to a range of activities both inside and outside of the home. The staff team worked closely with health professionals and each person had been involved in developing the when I die section of their Health Action Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Plans. Surveys were returned from 3 people living in the home, 5 staff and health care professionals. People indicated they were happy with the service provided. One person said they make choices about their day to day lives. Staff enthused about the service provided to people saying that people were offered choices every day about what they would like to do and meals are always nice and of a good quality. Staff said that it was a friendly place to work, with excellent support from the manager, good training and staff who worked as a team. They said they strive to continue to improve on the good work we already do as a home. Health care professionals commented that Beechcroft provides a safe, respectful environment with thought given to service users needs and support. They also commented that occasionally staff accompanying people to appointments did not always have access to the relevant information necessary or an overall understanding of the needs of the person. The home has sent us some notifications about changes to staff and incidents affecting the wellbeing of people living at the home in accordance with our requirements. The DataSet indicated that 41 per cent of staff have a National Vocational Qualification in Health and Social Care and a further 51 per cent are completing their awards. New staff also have access to the Learning Disability Qualification as part of their induction programme. The AQAA stated that staff turnover had stabilised and that the staff team had been working together for over 12 months. The home had not received any complaints. We (CQC) had not received any expressions of concern or complaints. People living in the home said they knew how to use the complaints procedure and one said they would talk to the manager. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We think the quality of this service has remained the same. We will do a key inspection by 22nd October 2010. We can however inspect the home at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of people living at the home.
