What did we do for this annual service review? We sent out 5 surveys for residents and we received 3 of these. We sent out 8 surveys for the staff to complete and we received 6 of these. We looked at information about the home since our last key unannounced inspection that took place on the 3rd October 2008 when we rated the home as to provide good outcomes for the people living there. We looked at the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was completed by the Manager. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for the people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. What has this told us about the service? The surveys said that both the residents and the staff were generally satisfied with their experiences of Benyon Grove. For example all of the residents surveys said that the person had received enough information to help them in their decision where to live; all of the residents surveys said that the person received the care and support that they need. One person said that the home does well as it Looks after me.Another person said that the home ...has taken great care of me. One of the staff surveys said that the home is...very well decorated and gives the service users the feeling of living in their own home. All of the residents and staff surveys said that there was usually enough staff on duty and all of the staff surveys said that the person was satisfied with their induction training as it covered very well or mostly everything the person needed to knowhow to do their job. The majority (5) of the staff surveys said that the person had received training to give the person enough knowledge about health care and medication and all of the staff surveys said that the training they received helped them understand the individual needs of the people and kept them up to date with new ways of working. The AQAA told us that over 60 of the care staff have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 2 in care with 26 of the staff having a NVQ level 3 in care. This tells us that the people should be in safe hands. Within both types of the surveys we read where the people felt the home could do better: three of the 6 staff surveys said that the home could do better by increasing the range and number of activities for the residents;More group outings for s/u (service users) and Group activities for the residents/service users. One of the residents surveys said that the home could do better...with some more drivers for the minibus so I dont have to go in a taxi. The AQAA was completed in a detailed and timely manner. It told us that the people who live there have their individual needs valued and respected. For example the AQAA said We welcome the differences in people and this is why we tailor support around a persons unique needs and wishes. The AQAA also told us that the home has improved within the last 12 months by developing person centred care planning, a care planning Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 structure that respects and values people as unique individuals. The AQAA told us that the residents should be safe as all of the staff have attended training in safeguarding awareness, previously called protection of vulnerable adults against abuse or POVA. The AQAA said that there has been no safeguarding investigations and we have received no safeguarding allegations about any of the residents. According to the AQAA people should be able to make a complaint if they wished to as there is a Pictorial Complaints Procedure in pictorial format. All of the staff surveys said that the person knew what to do if someone had a concern about the home. This tells us that the home should have an open and transparent ethos. According to the AQAA there have been no complaints made against the home and we have received no such complaints. The way the AQAA was completed tells us that the home has a good quality assurance system. Also within the AQAA we read that there are systems in place to constantly reviewing the service we provide and striving to build on this to provide an excellent service. There were no requirements made in the report of our last key unannounced inspection of October 2008. According to the AQAA people who live, work and visit the home should be safe as there are in date safety and service checks, for example, on hoists, for fire detection and for fire fighting equipment. The home has sent us information that we require. We received on the 20th and on the 21st July 2009 reports of two separate medication errors. The home told us what action it had taken to ensure that the residents involved were safe and what action was taken to reduce the risks of such serious errors. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to follow our inspection schedule and we will carry out our next key unannounced inspection by the 2nd October 2010. We will continue to monitor information we receive about the home. Should we have concerns about the health, welfare and safety of any of the residents we may inspect Benyon Grove at any time.
