Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection of 10th June 2008. Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and that they acknowledge what further improvements they need to make. The AQAA told us that the home is managed in an open and inclusive manner recognising diversity and equality throughout all the activities of the service. The service ensures that peoples views are heard and listen to and that as a result of hearing peoples suggestions and opinions there have been changes made since the new manager has been in post. The AQAA identifies that improvements that have been made over the past months are. A better care planning system has been introduced. An activity organiser has been appointed and there is now a more structured programme that is displayed for service users to choose from. Areas of the home have been refurbished with new curtains and carpets replace throughout the ground floor. The new manager has identified areas of the service that she wishes to improve in the coming year, these being. A more effective senior staff structure who have a development programme in place. Regular supervision and appraisal for staff. Promote and maintain better teamwork. All staff to be trained in dementia. Maintain a quality assurance system to ensure standards are maintained. Surveys had been distributed to service users, care managers, GP and other visiting professionals. Seven (7) service user survey, (four of which were completed by relatives), two visiting professionals and two district nurses surveys were returned to the CQC. The outcome of the surveys indicated that there was a high level of satisfaction with the service and that generally residents and health care professionals were very satisfied with the care and other services the home provides. Comments made on surveys were: The home cares for the residents very well. The home is Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 clean and hygienic and the in-house entertainment and personal services are good. There is open access for relatives and friends and staff are available to discuss issues with relatives. The home is a secure and hazard free environment with very friendly staff. The use of structured work such as reminiscence therapy would help residents to maintain their sense of individuality. Staff are very friendly and gentle with residents never rushing them. Staff are always smiling and nothing is too much trouble. The home maintains good standard of cleanliness, very good well balanced meals with a variety of menus. Overall this is a very good home. The staff make sure I am ready to go out. Make sure I attend all meals and give me choices. Always on hand to help, talk and listen to me. Laundry is always done on time. Service user and staff surveys indicate that people who use the service are aware of how to complain and who to go to if there are any complaints or a service user is not happy. The AQAA told us that there had been one complaint received by the home since the last inspection visit, which was resolved. The CQC have not received any complaints. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by the 10th June 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
