What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The registered manager of Briarways returned a good quality, comprehensive and informative AQAA (Annual Quality Assurance Assessment) within the timescale we had given. The AQAA identified areas of the service that had changed or improved over the past year and where further improvements were planned. The self assessment tells us that there have been no new admissions since the last inspection. When new service users and their representatives are considering the home they have access to up to date information and there is a thorough assessment process. Each service user has a care plan that is person centred, prepared prior to admission and reviewed within the first three months. The development of person centred care plans has been expanded upon over the past year. Care plans are comprehensive and include health and personal care, behavioural and social needs, activity plans and the persons goals and strengths, plans are prepared in consultation with the service user, families and other professionals. The AQAA says that each service user also has a health action plan and appointments with health care professionals are arranged according to individual needs. Personal care preferences are respected and the home has flexible routines. There are robust procedures in place for the administration of medication, they have been updated in the past year. The AQAA says there are plans to ensure all established staff take medication refresher training and the manager will be attending a relevant pain management course in the next twelve months. A health care professional who returned a survey was positive about the service. The AQAA tells us that service users are supported to make choices and to be independent, this includes giving them support with personal finances and choice of activities. Risks are assessed, documented in the care plan and regularly reviewed. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 Service users lead an active lifestyle and have a structured weekly activity programme, the AQAA gives examples such as swimming,a ceramics workshop, attending college, going to the cinema and eating out.Holidays of choice are provided or days out are arranged if the service user prefers.Service users are encouraged to take part in some domestic activities at the home. The AQAA states that meals are varied and well balanced. There is a pictorial menu and service users take part in planning the menu. There is a complaints procedure that has been reviewed, the AQAA says that some service users who have communication difficulties would need support to complain but staff work hard to interpret their needs and moods. No complaints had received by the home in the past year. Staff all receive regular safeguarding vulnerable adults training and training to help them to manage challenging behaviour. The AQAA tells us that staff are aware of the need to consider if service users require a deprivation of liberty assessment. There have been no safeguarding alerts raised in the past year. Improvements to the environment include redecoration of the office, the fitting of carbon monoxide detectors, the provision of a new television and sofas in the lounge, fitting of new windows and new fencing for the garden. Further planned improvements for the coming year include redecoration of the hall, stairs and landing. Four members of staff returned surveys, they told us that when they were recruited they had references and Criminal Record Bureau checks taken up,they are well supported and they have training that is relevant and equips them with the knowledge they need. Comments in the forms from staff included,Good communication,It is one of the best services in the company. There is a positive team spirit and it reflects on all work and the service users quality of life and Briarways is a happy environment to work in. The AQAA confirms that staff receive core training and can attend specialist training that is tailored to service users needs, specialist courses include autism and challenging behaviour.NVQ training is promoted and two more staff have gained NVQ in care level two. The staff team is diverse and has remained stable over the past year. The AQAA states that recruitment processes are thorough and new staff receive induction when they start work, new induction training has been introduced this year. Equality and diversity training is available and the home plans to make sure all staff attend it in the coming year. The AQAA says that equality and diversity are promoted, service users are encouraged to value diversity and staff are encouraged to share information about their cultures. This has included staff cooking meals from their cultures which has been a great success. The home home continues to demonstrate that it provides an excellent service, the registered manager is well qualified for their role and the deputy manager has gained the Registered Managers Award and NVQ level 4 in care. There are quality assurance
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 systems in place. The organisation employs a quality manager who undertakes regular visits to the home on behalf of the provider as is required and there are internal audits and self assessments. An annual quality assurance survey takes place and the views of service users are sought individually. The home takes action to make improvements highlighted in surveys. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection of the service by 26th January 2012.
