What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received since the last inspection of the 5th November 2008. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed and sent to us by the service. The AQAA is as self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for those people who use the service. The AQAA tells us what the home does at present, what they feel they do well and what they feel they need to do better. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Any information we may have received from people who have an interest in the service. Feedback surveys returned to us from the residents who live at the home. The previous key inspection report that showed the home was rated as good. What has this told us about the service? Management sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) in August 2009. The information provided shows how the home is managed, what improvements management have made and their plans for the next 12 months. Management told us (the CQC) that the residents have become more content and feel happy and confident in expressing their views. This they feel is due to the fact that the residents receive ongoing meetings with their key workers as well as with management. We were told that there is an open door policy at Browfield which enables the residents to speak to management without fear of retribution, as and when any issues arise. We were told that due to the regular monthly meetings, the residents have their say in relation to creating the menus, choosing the decor for their rooms and the lounges, deciding where to go for holidays and what they would like to do to access activities out in the community. Some of the improvements they told us about were: More staff training has been provided. Staff continue to receive updates in relevant training. This ensures that the residents are cared for safely and properly. Staff turnover is very low. This ensures continuity of care for the residents. New procedures have been put in place for the management of medicines. This ensures the safety and wellbeing of the residents. The residents are now attending more day care facilities out in the community. This Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 helps the residents get as much enjoyment as they can out of their daily activities. Improvements continue to be made to the environment. 2 of the lounges and the dining room have recently been redecorated. In addition 3 bedrooms have also been redecorated and new beds and new bedroom furniture have been provided for 3 of the bedrooms. As part of the review we asked some residents to complete our surveys telling us what they think about the care and facilities provided at the home. We received 7 surveys back. The residents told us that they were very happy at the home. 1 resident said I do not want to move from here. Another resident said Everything is good. They told us that they liked the food, liked the holidays and that the staff looked after them well. No complaints have been made to us or to the home and we have had no cause to visit the home since the last inspection. Our judgement is that the staff are still providing a good service for the people living at the home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan for this service and will do a key inspection by the 5th November 2010. We can however, inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people who live there. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
