What the care home does well The service is small and provides an individualised service to both people living in the home. The staff demonstrate excellent knowledge and understanding of each person`s needs and how they are to be met. The care plans are detailed and provide staff with the information they need to meet individuals needs in a consistent way. The staff working in the service told the inspector that they have received the training they need to carry out their roles. Observations throughout the visit showed that staff treat service users with respect and promote their choice and independence in all daily activities. The service users participate in a range of activities based on their own interests and preferences. This includes working on a farm, swimming, golf, a healthy walking community group, outdoor fitness/activity centre, going to the pub and holistic therapy. In addition the service users are supported to undertake their household duties and own laundry. The home itself is comfortable, clean and homely for the service users. Each person has their own room, both of which have been recently redecorated. There is a lounge and dining room and both have access to private seating/lounge areas in their own bedrooms. The kitchen is accessible to service users to enable them to prepare their own meals. The home has large gardens with seating areas and where the service users are currently growing vegetables and caring for their pet pigs. The home has a new manager who shares her time between Calcott bungalow and another Avenues service nearby. The staff say that this arrangement works well. The quality assurance audits for the service were seen and it was evident that action had been taken by the manager to address areas on the action plan. There has been a recent full health and safety audit of the home. This service continues to be well managed and provide excellent outcomes for those that use it. The service comprises three single bedrooms, a lounge and dining room, bathroom, WC, laundry, kitchen facilities and garden. This was a short focused inspection of Calcott bungalow carried out on 16th June 2010 by Jo Griffiths. The last full key inspection of this service took place on 5th April 2007 where it was rated as 3 star, providing excellent outcomes for people living in the home. The purpose of this inspection was to check that the service is continuing to maintain the same standards and to ensure that there have been no significant changes within the home that may negatively impact on users experiences. During the inspection there were three staff on duty, supporting the two people that live in the home. The staff and users of the service were spoken with and showed the inspector around the home. The inspector looked at the registered providers quality assurance system for the home and both of the residents care/support plans. What the care home does well:
