Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: 1. The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. 2. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. 3. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. 4. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. 5. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. 6. Relevant information from other organisations. 7. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We received nine surveys from residents or their families. They had been helped to complete them by a member of staff. They told us that they received the care and support that they needed and that staff were always or usually available when they needed them. They told us that care staff listened to what they say. Not everybody knew who to speak to if they were not happy or how to make a complaint. Five healthcare professionals returned the surveys. They were mixed in their views but all said that peoples social and healthcare needs were always or usually properly monitored, reviewed and met by the home. Ten members of staff returned the surveys. They made some positive comments about the home. Some staff thought that activities were good and that the care and support for residents was good. Five members of staff said that were always given up to date information about residents although five said that this was only usually or sometimes given. One commented that shift handovers are for the qualified nurses only and carers do not always get to know what is going on. Two members of staff said that they did not know what to do if someone has concerns about the home. Staff members also expressed concern about confidentiality and the way in which peoples privacy and dignity was protected when they were undressed. In answer to the question does your manager give you enough support and meet with you to discuss how you are working, four members of staff said regularly, two often, three sometimes and one never. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 inspection. The manager said in the AQAA that she had received eight complaints in the last year, two of which had been upheld. She also said that five safeguarding referrals had been investigated by the local authority which is the lead agency in these matters. We have concerns about some of the information we have received whilst undertaking this annual service review and will be revising our inspection plan. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by April 2010 However we can inspect the service at any time if we have further concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
