Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The annual service review for Coopers way included the following : The last key inspection was undertaken on 24/11/07 when it received the quality rating of 2*. The person in charge was asked to complete an Annual Assurance Assessment (AQAA) by us. The AQAA is a self-assessment and Data set, which providers are asked to complete each year and is one of the main ways that we can obtain information about how they are meeting the outcomes for people using the service. Completion of the AQAA gives providers the opportunity to tell us about their service and how well they think they are performing. This information allows us to develop a picture of the service being provided and target our inspection activity. Surveys were returned to us by people who stay at the home, giving us their views about Coopers Way. What the manager has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Information from previous inspections and any information received from organisations since the last inspection. What has this told us about the service? The manager of Coopers Way completed the AQAA and we received it on the 05/10/09. The information provided was clear and showed us how the service was meeting the expectations and outcomes for people living at the home. The AQAA was detailed, clear and included what they did well and how they could improve the service. Although this is a small home providing respite care the response from surveys sent to people who come and stay at Coopers way asking them for their views on how the home is run was good. Comments we did receive were very positive, they included, I am completely satisfied with the care I receive. Also, I look forward to each visit. The manager tells us in the AQAA they have developed a system for carers and people who come and stay at the home to place comments and concerns in a comments box in the main hallway to allow people who wish to remain anonymous have there say. There have been no complaints since the previous inspection and people are encouraged to discuss issues with the manager should any problem arise. All Surveys returned from people ticked the box yes, when asked if they know how to make a complaint. The manager informs us in the AQAA how they intend to improve the maintenance of the building over the coming year, so that people continue to live in pleasant surroundings. The general updating and redecoration will be ongoing around the home as planned. The manager tells us they plan employing a housekeeper which would Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 allow more time for care staff to spend with residents and maintain the high standard of cleanliness. One survey returned said, The building is clean and always looks homely. Equality and diversity is promoted within the home, and the manager tells us in the AQAA staff have received training to, ensure awareness and understanding of issues and importance of equality and diversity within the service. We looked at information provided by the manager in the AQAA around staff training. Currently all staff have completed a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) to at least level 2 with the majority to level 3, ensuring staff are well trained and have the skills to provide good care. The manager informs us in the AQAA to improve staff competences in the coming year staff will receive specialised training in communication techniques. This will involve communication boards, electrical communication tools, support from the speech therapist and language therapist. One person filling in the survey on behalf of his brother wrote, The staff are well trained and vigilant. Since the last inspection the manager has kept us informed of any issues that have happened and how they have been dealt with. The manager and staff continue to provide a good service to people who stay at the home and improve outcomes for everyone at Coopers Way. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor the information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required.
