Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found:
This inspection was undertaken as part of the inspection programme for Ruskin Lodge. The areas that were inspected looked at the care and support given to the guests, as they like to be called, and to the protection afforded to them. An individual plan of care is prepared for each guest who stays at Ruskin Lodge. Prior to admission, full assessments of need and preferences are undertaken by Welfare Officers, who are employed by the Trust, and all information gathered is incorporated into the plan of care. A sample of care files were inspected and each was found to contain comprehensive information to enable the staff to meet the guests needs and preferences. Some guests have stayed at the service on a number of occasions and have expressed a wish to stay in a particular room. Every effort is made to respect this request and all other preferences. The files contain information about how the guest likes to have their personal care attended to and their daily routine and the daily records provide evidence that these preferences are met. The daily records also provide evidence of the specific care given to each individual and show that their care needs are met. Some guests attend to their own medications and secure facilities are provided in bedrooms for the storage of these. The ability to attend to their own medications is assessed at the initial assessment and is reviewed on admission. Medication records were found to be clear and up to date. Detailed records of all medications entering or leaving the home are held. Guests are required to bring sufficient medications for their entire stay wherever possible. All medications are stored securely an a detailed audit system is in place. Staff are given training on medications on a regular basis to ensure that guests are protected. A high number of activities are provided for guests and evidence of these are held. Comments received from one former guest stated that the number and range of activities had reduced since a previous visit. Other comments in the surveys sent out by CQC were positive about the activities. Improvements are being made to the menus and meals provided by the home to provide guests with greater choice of meals which are home made. The home has a robust complaints procedure which is displayed in the foyer and also detailed in the information pack which is provided to guests. Records held show that the one complaint made was investigated fully and appropriate action taken accordingly. All staff are trained in the protection of vulnerable adults and are aware of the action to be taken in the event of harm or abuse being suspected. Full risk assessments are made on the premises and a health and safety in the workplace assessment is undertaken on a monthly basis. Maintenance staff ensure that repairs are addressed and that safety is ensured. What the care home does well:
