What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives some numerical information about the service. Information we hold about how well the service has managed concerns, complaints or safeguarding alerts and subsequent investigations. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called Notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous Key Inspection report dated 6th January 2009. Relevant information received from other organisations. What people have told us about how the the service operates. We had a brief discussion with the Registered Manager to clarify points raised in the homes AQAA and to further update us. What has this told us about the service? Cranmer Court was awarded the quality rating of 2 stars - Good following the homes Key Inspection on the 6th January 2009. In line with CQC strategic priority, it has been decided that the first annual service review (ASR) for this home will be brought forward. The overall analysis of information received by us since the homes Key Inspection was undertaken demonstrates that the service continues to perform in line with the rating of 2 stars - Good. The registered manager sent us the homes completed AQAA as requested. Content had improved from the one submitted last year which gave limited written information and the data section was incomplete. The content of the AQAA at this review gave a reasonable picture of the current situation in the home. More supporting evidence would have been useful in some areas to further illustrate what the service had achieved in the last year and their plans for further improvement. The manager was however able to fill in the gaps in information provided during discussions held with her prior to the report being written. Based on all the available information it has therefore been concluded that the homes operation and management demonstrates ongoing commitment to the provision of individualised quality care and support for the people using this service. Service users health needs are monitored and met and staff has the necessary skills and training to support and care for older people and affords them opportunities for Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 choice in their daily lives. The AQAA evidences that the home is further developing their expertise in standards of end of life care. The manager records....We have started the Gold Standards Framework for Care Homes which will lead to improved end of life care. In line with statements made by the inspector in the last inspection report concerning the need to further develop daily records and care planning review systems, the manager records that.....new care plan documentation has started to be introduced, which will ensure more personalised care is provided. It is evident from the information provided that the homes policies, procedures and guidelines are current and designed to promote equality and diversity and nondiscriminatory practice. The manager records.....We ensure that the homes policies and procedures are inclusive of all, and that all groups are respected and their wishes incorporated in to the day to day running of the home. The manager confirms that staffing levels are being monitored and adjusted to meet individual health, support and engagement needs. Staff training also takes a high profile. The AQAA records....The company highlights the importance of staff training and as such all of our staff are well developed individuals who are able to care for the needs of all of our residents. There is sufficient evidence to record that continuous improvement has been sustained in the homes environment, creating a clean and comfortable, domestic place in which people using services can enjoy their lives. The manager records her plans for further development in the next 12 months.....Redecoration of rooms and communal areas as necessary and obtain some benches for the garden. The homes complaints procedure is accessible and current. The AQAA records that the home has received two formal complaints over the last 12 months. Both complaints have been investigated, dealt with appropriately and are now closed. Our records confirm that the home has not been involved in any safeguarding alerts concerning service users accommodated at Cranmer Court. The registered manager is aware of barriers to improvement and has taken action to reduce and minimise those within her control. The manager is likewise aware of where further improvements could be made and spoke of her plans for the homes continuous development. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to our current inspection schedule for this service. A key unannounced inspection will be undertaken by the 5th January 2011. The CQC can however inspect at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
