Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA gave us the information we needed to complete an annual service review (ASR). We got detailed information from the AQAA. It provided us with evidence of how the home has made improvements since the last key inspection. The home has improved how it includes the people that live there in the development of the home by asking them for their views and ideas about improvements in their care so they are able to influence changes to the service provided. The home holds regular meetings as well as asking people that live there or their relatives or others who have an interest in their care what they think about the facilities, services, care and support provided through sending out surveys to them so they can make comments on the management of the home. This has led to changes to the recreational, leisure and educational opportunities people living at the home have so they have a more fulfilled life. The home has introduced art and craft and music classes for people as well as enrolling them on relevant college courses. The home has made an arrangement with a hotel in Blackpool to pick up people living at the home and take the for outings or shows and events held at the hotel so they have more recreational activities outside of the home. The AQAA told us that people are supported to attend church services or receive communion at the home so are able to practise their faith. People are also supported to take part in community activities such as going to watch Preston North End football club and have season tickets for this so are able to pursue interests of their choice. The AQAA says the recession had made it difficult to support people living at the home to attend concerts or go to the theatre due to the price of tickets and not being able to get concessions for carers so they have increased the number of entertainers that visit the home so people that live there have opportunities to enjoy entertainment in their home. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 The AQAA told us that improvements have been made to the building with new carpets fitted in bedrooms which have also bee redecorated so the provider maintains the building to a good standard. The provider also aims to replace corridor carpets and continue with redecoration of bedrooms and communal areas. There is a high percentage of staff who hold an NVQ level 2 qualifications so the home has well above the expected national average of suitably qualified staff. An NVQ level 2 qualification is a nationally recognised qualification in social care. The AQAA tells us that the home continues to improve in how it gathers important information about the needs of people choosing and then living in the home so the most appropriate care can be planned around the needs of people living at the home. This has been done by the home looking at different ways and areas where information is needed for example on mental capacity so the home can plan the right care and support for people living there or identify further training for staff. The AQAA tells us that people are put at the centre of their care and are involved in all aspects of decisions and choices about their care, daily routines and lifestyles so care is person centred. The surveys returned by people living at the home said they liked living at the home They said they chose to live at the home and chose what to do with their time. They said they were always listened to by staff working at the home who acted upon what they said and were always respectful to them. Comments received were, Good activities, good food, good opportunity to socialise with other residents. I have no complaints, Does well at arranging outings, functions and events that are enjoyed by me. I am a season ticket holder for Preston North End and bought the ticket and enjoy going to the matches. I am happy and Good choice at meal times. Friendly and efficient staff. I am very satisfied with the home. We also received surveys from staff who said they were always given the right training and information for them to provide care and support for people living at the home. Staff said the manager met with them regularly to provide guidance to them so were supported to do their jobs. Comments received were, Provide great care for clients. Helps as best they can to cater for all needs, Does well by caring for service users in meeting all dietary and activity needs and maintaining a homely atmosphere and Caring for service users to a very good standard. When service users are in hospital staff go to hospital to help them to eat. We are always told about important things that have happened in the home since we did our last key inspection. The home is managed in a way that shows it has the interests of the people living there at the centre of what they do. The home sends us information about the welfare of people living there so we have up to date information about the home. We received one complaints about Derby Lodge in the last year. They have told us that they had received one complaint. The home told us they had made no safeguarding referrals on the last 12 months and we have received no safeguarding concerns about the home. The safeguarding procedure is how the local council and other agencies involved respond to and manage allegtaions of abuse against vulnerable adults and children.
