What did we do for this annual service review? We reviewed the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We looked at nine surveys returned to us by people who use the service (ten were sent). We looked at what the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. We considered the previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. We noted any relevant information from other organisations. We listened to what other people have told us about the service, if anything. What has this told us about the service? We received the annual quality assurance assessment before the date it was due back. It was completed to a high standard and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service. The AQAA says that there have been 18 deaths and two falls in the 12 months preceding this review. The manager is very aware of the continuing changes in the needs of the resident population. We received nine surveys completed by people who live in the home, some were completed with help from family, staff or friends and some were completed independently. All nine were very positive, some comments were there are high standards in the home, staff are always happy, we get friendly care and attention, they are always there to help with hearing aids and personal needs, activities are arranged daily, the home provides security and a comfortable environment, I feel well looked after, the manager listens to my requests, I feel safe and in a kind environment, Im happy here at the Donnington, staff are always kind and friendly and willing to give help and support and it would be difficult to find anything they could do better. However there were some comments on what could be better, these included, there is no pay phone that I can use, the new flat screen T.Vs have small remote controls, which are difficult, the garden has few pathways , so that we cannot walk in it, we need to do more socialising with able bodied/minded people, I would like not to be able to hear other peoples T.Vs and they could serve meals on hot plates. The AQAA noted that improvements had been made as a result of the home listening Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 to the views of the people who live there, these included, organising themed events which incorporate activities and menus, ensuring comprehensive individual plans of care are completed and refurbishing areas of the home. The home demonstrates its commitment to equality and diversity in a number of ways such as , ensuring all care plans are tailored to meet peoples individual needs and actively promoting freedom of choice throughout residents care. The home advised us that the requirement that the home must ensure all staff files are checked to make sure they holfd the necessary information, made at the last inspection had been met by an audit of all staff files undertaken in December 2008. The home continues to let us know what has happened in the service and works well with us. The AQAA reported that the home had received two complaints, in the last year, these had been resolved within 28 days, they reported that no safeguarding issues had been identified. The Commission has received no information with regard to complaints or safeguarding issues about the service. The home continues to provide good outcomes for people who live in the home, and people have told us that they are very happy with the service provided. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by the 26th of November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
