What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last Key Inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the home. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people at Drakes Place; it also gave us some numerical information. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints. What the home has told us about significant things that have happened, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The outcome of the last Key Inspection we carried out in June 2008 . What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that Drakes Place is still providing a good service. The home state in their AQAA that they make sure they listen to the views of the people who live here. They arrange monthly residents meetings, an open forum to allow each person to discuss all aspects of daily life at Drakes Place. People are involved in various groups, such as the entertainments committee, which suggests and help plan the homes social calendar. Each person plans their own activities, with help from people close to them if they wish or if they need extra support. Individuals choose where they would like to go on holiday and which staff they would like to accompany them. The home has an open door policy and individuals regularly assist with planning the weekly staffing rota; they also help to choose the staff who work in the home as they sit in on staff recruitment interviews. They have made the following changes as a result of listening to the people who live at Drakes Place. Menus are changed regularly, ensuring that most menu requests are met. People are aware that they can choose what time they would like to eat and if they wish to eat with others or on their own. The home has increased college attendance and access more external activities so people have the opportunity to learn and socialise in different environments. Internet access has been installed in the computer suite so people can contact their families and friends through e-mail. Improvements have been made to Squirrel Park; the garden has been redesigned, making it a much more user friendly space. Two large windows have been installed in the lounge to increase natural light. A larger television has been purchased for the Oaks, so that people with restricted vision are able to view more comfortably. The Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 home have now recruited a full compliment of day staff, which enables them to offer and support a wide and varied choice of activities. They also have a new vehicle, so that people can access the community with greater ease. They also know what further improvements they wish to make including: develop and implement health action plans, ensure all staff receive total communication training to help them communicate effectively, continue to source training to expand the staff teams knowledge and skills and to further improve the environment.
