What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what improvements they need to make. In their AQAA the home told us We do the following to ensure that race, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion and belief are promoted and incorporated into what we do: The principles of equal rights, equal access and equal treatment run through every aspect of the service at East Cosham House, for both residents and staff. Information regarding residents religious beliefs are recorded and any wish to attend a religious services is facilitated. Our recruitment policy reflects equal opportunities. Our staff group is diverse regarding age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and religion. We ensure that residents religious beliefs are taken account of. We have reviewed our recruitment procedures to ensure our practice is non-discriminatory. Staff training in equality and diversity is incorporated into the training plan. In their AQAA the home also informed us since the last inspection the following changes and improvements have been implemented: The responsibilities of the deputy managers have been amended to enable them to spend a greater proportion of their time caring for residents. This has enhanced their awareness of residents needs, standards of care and staff skills. It also enables them to promote good practice and lead by example. We have supported and encouraged more staff to undertake NVQ2. 76 have now achieved the qualification, an increase from 50 last year. The manager has undertaken an accredited moving and handling instructors course. This enables him to train staff in-house and to provide day-to-day advice on moving and handling issues. This training is updated annually. Our use of agency staff has decreased. We have purchased more resources for staff. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Future plans include: To implement an annual appraisal for all staff commencing March 2010. A questionnaire for staff re training, supervision and staff meetings needs to be developed, this has been included in the improvement plan. We are working with the Community Nursing Service for Care Homes to deliver short courses in-house. The initial courses booked are Care of the dying, pressure area awareness, nutrition and infection control. The home has shown that they have managed issues well. No complaints have been received by CSCI the previous regulator or CQC since the last inspection. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for people who use the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by September 25th 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
