What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and they have identified what improvements they have made over the past year and what further improvements they wish to make. People living in the home tell us they are happy there. They told us that they get the care and support they need, staff are available for them and that the staff listen to and act upon what they say. We received three comments from relatives of service users living at the home. All expressed their general satisfaction with the quality of care and support provided at Elizabeth Lodge. Comments include: the home provides everything my mother-in-law needs. Staff are very kind and patient towards residents and the manager of the home is excellent. My mother is given all the care and help she needs but is also encouraged to be independent. One staff member survey was returned to us and told us that the staff have good support from the manager with sufficient staff on duty to meet the individual needs of service users. A GP returned a survey that told us that service users privacy and dignity is respected Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 and that the manager and staff have the right skills and experience to support the social and health care needs of the service users. The AQAA states that in the last the year there have been improvements made to the pre-admission assessment and now incorporates the Mental Health Act. The AQAA told us the service has now employed an activities organiser and that the activities programme has expanded with more varied options for service users to participate in and for going out into the community. The home encourages relatives to become involved with the activities of home life. The AQAA tells us that the service is committed to meet the training needs of the staff within the confines of a budget, but the manager seeks out free or cheaper training packages to encourage staff to attend. The AQAA also told us that the environment has undergone some improvement over the last year with redecorated bedrooms and grab rails positioned throughout the home. The service anticipates replacing carpeting throughout the home in the next year. The service has told the Commission that they have not received any complaints since the last key inspection. No requirements were made at the last key inspection on 29th July 2008. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by the 29th July 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
