What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, that was completed on the 22 January 2009. This included; The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that is completed by the service and focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service, this was well completed and was provided when requested. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations including Social Services and visiting health care professionals. The registered manager was also contacted by telephone on the day of the Annual Service Review for up to date information on the service, and confirmation on how the home has addressed the requirements made at the last inspection. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. This provided information on the service that included numerical information that was requested. The AQAA was well completed by the registered manager and identified areas that have improved in the last year, and others where further developments are either planned or would benefit residents. The last key inspection was completed in January 2009 and was positive with regard to resident care with all outcome areas being judged as good, apart from those related to staffing, which was rated as adequate. Six requirements were made following this inspection. The AQAA and contact with the manager confirmed that all these requirements have been addressed. The home now always confirms in writing following a needs assessment if the home is able to meet the assessed needs. The care documentation has been changed, and now reflects a more person centred approach to care. Identifying specific individual choices and preferences and clearly recording how staff can meet residents needs. Regular reviews are completed in conjunction with the resident, or their representative. Risk assessments are in place and include ones used to assess nutritional status, and competency for self administration of medicines. The environment is also assessed for any risks regularly. Staff training has been developed and now ensures all staff receive the required mandatory training, along with training to ensure that staff are able to meet the needs of residents. The contents of the AQAA recorded that the required safety checks and servicing is completed on all its equipment and services, and that all the required policies and procedures are in place, and are regularly updated. The AQAA also recorded that no complaints had been received by the home since the last inspection. The manager confirmed that all concerns raised are taken seriously and Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 responded to quickly so that they do not develop into serious concerns or complaints. No safeguarding alerts have been raised. Since the last key inspection the home has worked to improve some key areas in the home. This has included the provision of training in the home, with an emphasis on accessing National Vocational Qualification training for staff. The home has also changed its systems for medicine administration and storage, and staff have confirmed that they find this a much safer way of storing and administering medication. A new controlled drug cupboard has also been sourced and the manager agreed to consult with her supplying pharmacist to ensure that this complies with the most recent legislation. Further information on this matter is available on the Care Quality Commissions Internet within the guidance document The safe management of controlled drugs in care homes. The manager confirmed that one of the main strengths of the home, was the friendly and homely atmosphere. This is promoted by the open approach and availability of the management team, who are in the home most days. A good rapport is maintained at all levels and comments and views of staff, residents and their representatives are taken into account, and responded to in a proactive way. Eridge House is a well maintained home that retains a pleasant attractive environment, that includes a conservatory and nice garden area. A housing unit has been built in the garden for the storage of residents electric buggies. This has a supply of electricity for charging purposes. The AQAA confirmed a good standard of food and activity programme, and the effort made to ensure the individuality of each resident is upheld, and that they can retain a preferred lifestyle in the home. The information provided by the home confirmed our judgment, that the home continues to provide a good service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to the inspection schedule and the Care Quality Commission will do a key inspection by 22 January 2011. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service, or the safety of the people using the service.
