Annual Service Review Page 3 of 8 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review:
What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last Key Inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was completed by the provider/manager and sent to us prior to this Annual Service Review (ASR). The AQAA is a self-assessment tool that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by ten residents, eight representatives and eight members of staff employed at the home. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The provider sent us the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA), which was clear and gave us information about what they are doing now and what they want to do in the future. The last key inspection of this service was undertaken on 13th January 2009. The provider has told us that the following improvements have been made: The enquiry system has been updated. An infection control handbook has been introduced and all staff have been trained. An action plan has been produced following an Infection Control Audit. Domestic staffing has been restructured and improved. The types of activities made available have been extended and 1:1 activities have been increased with residents that are reluctant to join group activities. The compliments file has been updated and satisfaction surveys introduced. Environmental improvements include the replacement of carpets in the communal areas, new furniture purchased, 12 bedrooms updated, new dining room curtains purchased and en-suite facilities introduced. Externally a greenhouse and vegetable patch have also been introduced. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 8 Staff have received Sensory Care training sessions in Ophthalmology and Audiology. The service have completed and exceeded their aims. Ten residents completed surveys for us, five with the assistance of a member of staff. They told us that they always receive the care and support they need, that the home always makes sure they get the medical care they need, nine people said that staff are always available when they need them and they all said that staff listen and act on what they say. Residents also told us that activities are made available, that they enjoy the meals provided and that the home is always fresh and clean. Residents told us that the home does the following well: Everything The owner and staff are always courteous. I have been here for X years and so thankful I decided to come, I appreciate being able to read and listen quietly to music on my own after a very busy life. Various activities are arranged to suit different tastes but we are not pressured to joining in against our wishes...I appreciate having meals brought to my room - always with a smile Its clean, comfortable and feels like home. Whenever I ask for something it is done. The Ferns encourages us to socialise and we eat in small groups. There are enjoyable activities. It feels like it is run for the residents well being. I have thrived since I have been here, put on weight and become cheerful again... We received eight surveys from representatives of people who live at The Ferns. Feedback was extremely positive. They told us that they are always given enough information about the care service and that the service always meets the needs of individuals, that the home always helps residents keep in touch with those close to them, that staff have the right skills and experience to look after people properly and that the service always supports people to live the life they choose. Pauline and Lakin are a good team and have trained staff so well developing a really outstanding care home The Ferns is a person centred home that feels like home. Everything is spotless... residents are encouraged to socialise...this is not a last resort drop off point for the elderly Everything, The Ferns is an excellent retirement home Treats all like one big family, always a nice ambience when entering the building. The staff are excellent, always polite and willing to help, nothing appears to be too much trouble 10/10 Representatives told us that the service could do the following better: Nothing Nothing, everything is required of them is always forthcoming Shame that health and safety makes it difficult to allow walking frames to stay with their owners if they want to go into the lounges and dining room. Some paths around the house are a little worn and perhaps could do with widening for people who use frames and wheelchairs Change hearing aid batteries more frequently and check its clean I cant think of anything. If there is a problem it is addressed immediately We received surveys from eight members of staff and their feedback was very positive. Staff told us that they are always given up-to-date information about the needs of the people they care for, that their employer carried out the necessary checks to make sure they were safe to work with vulnerable adults, that they receive training that is relevant to their role, helps them understand and meet the individual needs of people they care for and keeps them up to date with new ways of working. They indicated they regularly receive enough support from the manager and that there is always enough staff on duty to meet the individual needs of the residents. Staff told us that the service does the following well: I cannot think of a better place to work. This is the place that you can be proud to work in. We focus on the needs of our residents constantly. We have everything we need to carry out our work properly. If we need anything, all we have to do is ask The atmosphere of the home user-friendly, comfortable, clean and smell free (I think this is really important). Staffing levels are very good, there is always time to do what you need to do. My employer is constantly updating and replacing equipment. She redecorates and replaces carpets when necessary. In my department I am not restricted by a budget. I am able to produce good, home-cooked food using highquality produce. We are all encouraged to attend courses that will benefit us in our work. All staff are qualified. We provide a wide range of activities and include everyone Annual Service Review Page 6 of 8 All the carers have enough experience and knowledge to deal with any situations...the home is very good We did not receive any comments from staff about what the service could do better. The AQAA states that thirteen staff hold a national recognised qualification known as NVQ at level 2, eight staff have NVQ level 3 and one has NVQ level 4 in Care or Health and Social Care. We have not received any correspondence or concerns from the Environment Health Department or the Fire Department about the service in the last twelve months. The manager has ensured that we are notified of any event that has occurred affecting the health and wellbeing of the people living at the home since our last visit. The AQAA indicates that the service has not received any complaints in the last 12 months, demonstrating peoples continued satisfaction with the service. Surveys received indicate that the majority of people are aware of the complaints procedure or know what to do if someone has concerns about the home. We have not received any concerns or complaints about the service since we last visited the home and there have been no referrals or investigations triggered under safeguarding adult procedures. The last key inspection of the service concluded that people living at the home receive excellent outcomes. We looked at the information in the AQAA and the rest of the information we hold and our judgement is that the home continues to provide an excellent service to the people living at the home and the provider has identified areas for continued improvement. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 13th January 2012. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 7 of 8 Reader Information
