Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: - The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service - Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service - Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints - What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement - the previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months - Relevant information from other organisations - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The AQAA tells us that recent improvements have included enabling staff to accompany people to college (as colleges are no longer assisting with personal care), the recruitment of more staff, and more staff having completed National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) training in care. At our previous inspection a requirement was made concerning the administration of medicines, and the manager Mr Richards tells us in the AQAA that this requirement has been addressed. With regard to safeguarding issues, in the last year the service has taken action where necessary to ensure people receiving a service are protected from harm. We obtained Care Quality Commission (CQC) surveys from three people living in the Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 home. People told us in their survey forms that they were receiving the care and support they needed, that there was someone to talk to if they had concerns, and that they were aware of how to make a formal complaint. One person told us that the service supports people to develop their independence skills. We are told by one person living in the home that it would helpful if staff could spend more time with us chatting, sitting down. We obtained CQC surveys from two staff working in the home. One person told us that this is the friendliest, outgoing, easy natured home I have worked in and that there was a good mixture of residents working well together. Another member of staff told us that the service offers people a lot of freedom of choice. Service users are encouraged to do as much as possible for themselves and are encouraged to participate in outside activities and attend college. One member of staff told us they could do more to encourage people receiving a service to lead a healthy lifestyle. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 27th November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
