We looked at all the information we have received about Greenfields Lodge since the last inspection on 27th January 2009. We looked at the services Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This is a selfassessment document that the manager has completed to tell us how well outcomes are being met for the people who use this short break service. We sent surveys to guests, relatives and staff to ask for their views of how well Greenfields Lodge provides the short break service. We have also looked at any other information we have received, such as events or changes that the service has told us about. These are called notifications and it is important that care services keeps us up-to-date about anything that might affect the people who stay here or the running of the service. We have also looked at the previous inspection report to see what improvements the service has made since then. We spoke to the manager to talk about how the service is progressing. What has this told us about the service? Greenfields Lodge sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. It was very detailed and clear, and gave us all the information we asked for. Over the past few months Greenfields Lodge has been involved in a tendering process to see if its service was going to continue to have a contract with the local council. It has now been re-awarded the contract to provide a short break service for people with a learning disability. Despite the recent uncertainty, the service continued to make improvements where possible. For example, there is now more information in pictures for guests who use the service. It has also supported one guest to have a work placement for one day a week at the service. It has continued to offer guests a good range of activities in the local community. The service now has plans to improve the involvement of guests and their carers. For example it is going to re-introduce a committee for guests and relatives to discuss their views of the service. It plans to include guests and carers in recruiting new staff. Guests are to be more involved in planning menus and to take part in weekly grocery shopping trips to increase their independent living skills. Greenfields Lodge has arranged for a nutrition nurse to train staff in designing menus that meet different peoples cultural and dietary needs. There are plans to fit automatic door closures to all bedroom doors so guests can choose to use these for easy access to their bedrooms during their stay. The service has provided more training for staff in important areas, like infection control and safeguarding people. Of the 12 permanent staff, 9 have achieved a care Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 qualification in working with people with a learning disability and 3 are working towards this. We received six surveys from guests. They all had many positive comments about the service at Greenfields Lodge and said that they enjoy staying here. They said that the service is particularly good at outings, meals, and personal care. One guest said, We go out on the bus and chill out. One person felt it would be better if there was a new minibus. Three people said that it would be better if there were new beds and redecoration. The AQAA shows that the service has plans to start redecorating bedrooms and will involve the views of guests in this. Guests also said it would be better if the garden was easier to access on their own and if it was enclosed so that they could use it safely. The manager agreed that this would be a real benefit for the people who come to stay here, and has discussed this with the Provider. We received four very positive surveys from relatives who said that they were usually or always satisfied with all aspects of the service. One relative said, The service has very friendly, caring staff. They give a good all-round service and the service users are keen to join in. I have 100 trust in the staff and the service provided. Another relative said, He loves going to Greenfields but also said it would be better if they did not have to book 6 months in advance. We received surveys from seven staff, and all commented very positively on meeting individual peoples needs, staff training, and supportive management. Staff said that Greenfields Lodge provides a wide variety of activities for guests and has a welcome and enjoyable atmosphere. Another staff said, Greenfields is a lovely place to work, everyone is very friendly and we all support each other. There were no requirements made at the last inspection. There have been no complaints about this service. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. Our judgement is that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
