What the care home does well The environment was clean and homely. Staff were friendly and supportive towards residents. Documentation was orderly and located with ease. There were effective management audit tools in place. Residents and relatives were positive about the home. The manager and provider were pro-active and demonstrated commitment to providing continuing positive outcomes for residents. What the care home could do better: This inspection was very focused in nature and we did not assess all key standards. We did not note any requirements as a result of the visit. The medicine trolley was not secured to the adjacent wall, but arrangements by the provider had been made for this to be addressed by the end of the day. Random inspection report

The last key inspection was undertaken on 6th June 2007. Annual Service Reviews were undertaken on 14th November 2008 and 3rd December 2009. The home sent us a completed Annual Quality Assurance Assessment on 3rd December 2009. This random inspection focused on specific aspects and lasted three and half hours. This included looking at the information available to stakeholders, the care planning system, health records, staff records, the complaint recording system, the environment and management monitoring tools. We spoke with the registered provider, manager, staff and residents. Prior to the inspection, we had received eight completed surveys from residents (some had been completed by relatives on their behalf) and four completed surveys from members of staff. The comments about the home within these surveys was positive. The Statement of Purpose and Service Users Guide were both available. This provided information about the service to all stakeholders. We looked at various elements of two residents pre-admission assessments, their care plans and risk assessments. Both sets of documentation were detailed and current. We noted that the respective resident and their relatives had been involved in the care planning process. We looked at various elements of the medication administration recording system. The records we assessed were current and orderly. We looked at the medication storage system. Medicines were stored in a trolley which was located in a corridor outside the main office. We noted that the trolley was not secured to the wall. The provider confirmed that this would be addressed by the end of the day. We have not therefore made this observation a regulatory requirement within the report. The manager advised us that the home has a good relationship with health and social care professionals. We saw records to demonstrate that residents had received a balanced and varied diet. The home had recently received an inspection by Southend Council, Food Hygiene and Food Standards Department and had been awarded a 5* rating. The complaints procedure was displayed in the main corridor. The homes complaints recording process was robust. We discussed the homes policy on safeguarding vulnerable adults from harm. This was robust. The environment was comfortable, clean and warm. The bedrooms we saw were comfortably furnished and contained items of personal belongings. The utility areas were clean and orderly. The garden and patio areas were user friendly and residents confirmed that they use them in the good weather. There were generic environment and safe working practice risk assessments in place. We looked at various elements of a recruitment record belonging to the most recent member of staff. This had been completed by the provider. We were shown a current staff training programme and noted that records were available to demonstrate that staff had received regular supervision sessions. We saw records to demonstrate that there had
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 been regular resident and staff meetings. The manager demonstrated that the home had robust management monitoring tools in place. The registered provider visits the home twice weekly. The ground and second floor offices were orderly and all records requested by us were located with ease.
