What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last Key Inspection and Annual Service Review. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent out to the home; this was completed in detail and returned to us.The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people who live at Holly Tree Cottage. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. What the home has told us about significant things that have happened, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints. The outcome of the last Key Inspection we carried out in October 2007. The outcome of the last Annual Service Review we carried out in October 2008. What has this told us about the service? The latest AQAA says that the home has many systems in place to ensure the views of the people who live at Holly Tree Cottage, and those who are close to them, are promoted and incorporated into what they do. The people who live in the home meet every month to have an open discussion and each person is involved in their monthly care review. People are given the opportunity to communicate in a variety of ways; they use methods which best suit their needs. These include speech, using pictures or picture symbols and sign language. Regular contact is maintained with peoples families and friends so that there is a flow of information. The AQAA explains that they have made some changes as a result of listening to the people who live in the home; these include providing at least two key members of staff for each person to ensure greater consistency, employing more male members of staff, installing kitchen equipment and furniture to help one person become more independent, supporting two people to provide a gardening service to another of the organisations homes and another person to move to less supported accommodation and holding regular forums for peoples parents at the organisations head office. They also know what other changes they wish to make; these include supporting people to access communication networks on the internet, purchasing some new furniture and carpets and developing a vegetable patch in the garden. They have made changes to ensure equality and diversity is promoted: one person is now supported by more male members of staff at their request, arranging a range of holidays and trips tailored to peoples needs, supporting one person to attend a local Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 church and supporting people to create their own health action plans using formats chosen by them. There are six people who currently live at Holly Tree Cottage. The home employs 16 permanent care staff; eight are male and eight female. Every member of staff has been provided with a thorough induction to the home which meets current standards. Eight members of staff have attained a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and a further five staff are currently working towards their awards. They have had one complaint in the last 12 months; this was investigated in line with the homes policy as was not upheld. Following the last Key Inspection we made these judgements about the quality of the service provided at Holly Tree Cottage: Choice of Home, Individual Needs and Choices, Lifestyle, Personal and Healthcare Support, Concerns Complaints and Protection, Environment, Staffing and Conduct and Management of the Home were all rated as good. The overall rating of the home was 2 star. The information we received as part of the last Annual Service Review confirmed the home was still providing good levels of care and support. We did not change our inspection plan as a result of this review. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last visit and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who live at Holly Tree Cottage. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We believe the home is maintaining the same standard of care and support we assessed during the last Key Inspection. We will therefore carry out a full review of the home by 18th October 2010. However we can inspect Holly Tree Cottage at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people who live here.
