What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment [AQAA]. This is their own assessment of how well they are meeting peoples needs. It also contains factual information about the home. If we received them, we considered the results of surveys completed by people who use the service and from relatives, care managers and healthcare professionals. We considered information we have about how the service has managed any complaints, and about any events in the service which we must be told about. We looked at the previous key inspection report and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service since then. We also considered any information we may have received from other people or organisations. The last key inspection took place on 19th February 2009 and the home was given a rating of a two star, good service. We will carry out a key inspection at the latest by 18th February 2012. What has this told us about the service? The manager completed the self-assessment document when we asked for it. It contained the detailed information we wanted and showed that the manager is continuing to look at how the home could improve. During the last year, she has told us about events she must tell us about by law, such as accidents. Our judgement is that the home continues to provide a good service. The staff in the home filled in surveys for people who could not fill them in themselves. They all confirmed that people were well treated and carers listen and acted on what they said. But we were able to see surveys (sent out by the home) filled in by three relatives quite recently. All three said that they thought staff talked to them and their relative as adults, and they would feel able to complain if something was wrong. Two said that people living in the home were given choices. One said that all the staff looked after his relative really well, another that they were very happy with the help and encouragement provided at Hollyacre. A third said that staff were very caring. We received surveys back from three care managers who were responsible for people living in the home. They said that the home always or usually asked for advice and acted on it to meet peoples social and health care needs. Two said the home usually respected peoples privacy and dignity and one said they sometimes did. When we asked if the home supported people to live the life they chose wherever possible, one said always and gave the example that they have helped someone who has recently moved into the home to go to a weekly social club he used to attend at home and to visit his relative regularly. The two other care managers said they sometimes did. One care manager explained how staff had dealt sensitively with issues where they disagreed with others on what was in a residents best interests. We asked if they thought the homes manager and staff have the right skills and experience. One said usually, They appear to have the skills to care for him well and are experienced in caring for people with learning disabilities. The two others said they sometimes did. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 Two said that the home had always responded properly if they had concerns and the other said that it usually had. Staff are always willing to discuss concerns and give feedback. Four staff completed surveys. They all said that they were given up-to-date information about the needs of the people they cared for, were well-trained, and knew what to do if someone had concerns about the home. They said that the manager regularly or often met with them to give support and discuss how they were working. They all said that the ways they passed information about people between them always worked well. We asked if there were enough staff to meet everyones individual needs. Two said there always were and two said there usually were. We asked what the service did well and staff added, Caters for every clients individual needs. Great range of activities, indoors and outdoors, promote independence, uphold equality and diversity. Home does well at caring for all clients in all aspects of care, personal hygiene, respect all clients, taking client out into the community as much as possible. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan. We will carry out a key inspection by 18th February 2012. But we can inspect the home at any time if we have concerns. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
