Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: -The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment [AQAA] that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. -Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. -What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. -The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. -Relevant information from other organisations. -What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment [AQAA] that we took our information from is dated 16th September 2009. This provided satisfactory information. In the summary section of the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment [AQAA] the home identifies what the service does well as continuing to provide residents with a secure and homely atmosphere; with spiritual needs well met and providing a high standard of care. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment [AQAA] identifies how the home has improved over the last twelve months with staff training and supervision, provision of activities, on-going maintenance and redecoration. They identify what they could do better and how they are going to do this by continually improving the environment. Some examples of improvements that have occurred over the last twelve months include replacing all the curtains with flame retardant ones. Installing more emergency lights and smoke detectors around the home. All the gutters and broken roof tiles have been replaced and the roof cleaned. Staff have attended courses in malnutrition and prevention of falls. Meals have improved with the appointment of a new permanent cook and an activities co-ordinator has been appointed. Outings have been arranged with residents involvement. An organist visits the home monthly to entertain residents; regular sherry mornings, slide shows and cream teas have been introduced. The homes future plans include continuing with the redecoration and structural improvements. To purchase more wheelchairs to give residents improved access to the garden. To try and improve residents participation in activities by meeting with them Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 individually to discuss their suggestions and arrange extra activities/outings. To maintain staffs training. To contact an Occupational Therapist in respect of an exercise programme for residents. To provide a specific outdoor area for social activities to facilitate gardening, social gatherings, hobbies and interests. To encourage the residents to go out for meals and to arrange regular slide shows, musical and cultural entertainment. Other aspects identified in the AQAA indicate how they act on the views of residents by giving residents the opportunity to express their views, concerns and ideas at meetings where family and friends are also invited. Providing residents, visitors, friends and health care professionals with a quality assurance questionnaire to complete and then acting on suggestions. They indicate how they have made changes based on information received by improving meals, increasing activities and allocating carers more social time with individual residents. In respect of equality and diversity the home identifies they have good antidiscrimination policies in place and ensure staff follow good practice. They state they do not discriminate between anyone and do not tolerate discrimination amongst staff. They have made changes to their recruitment procedures in respect of lay staff to ensure there is no discrimination. The home was last inspected in November 2008. No requirements were made, four good practice recommendations were identified at that time. The data section of the AQAA indicates that two Sisters are doing their National Vocational Qualification [NVQ] in care at level 2, one at level 3 and another Sister is undertaking the Assessors course. There are currently thirteen staff in total with a National Vocational Qualification [NVQ] at level 2 or above in care and ten staff have completed the Skills For Care induction training. The AQAA indicates that maintenance of equipment, health, safety checks, policies, procedures and recruitment matters are in order. The home has identified in the AQAA that over the last twelve months they have not received any complaints or had any safeguarding investigations. The Care Quality Commission [CQC] have not received any concerns or complaints either since the last inspection in November 2008. The home reports notifications about significant occurrences to the Care Quality Commission [CQC]. The home has not been inspected since the last inspection in November 2008. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We consider the quality rating of the home remains the same since the last key inspection. We will do a key inspection by November 2010 to review our assessment of the home. However, we reserve the right to re-visit this decision if additional information is brought to our attention.
