What the care home does well Huish House is a large pleasant house with attractive gardens. Indoor communal space is comfortably furnished and homely. The registered manager and staff spoken with were open and discussed their efforts and hard work put into delivering a good standard of care. Staff all impressed with their commitment and enthusiasm to care for the people in residence. We heard that staff are happy and enjoy working here. One person said they " love it here". We heard that there is a good two way staff supervision process. All staff said they would feel able to raise a concern in house if a problem occurred. The registered manager is well organised and is aware of all the work pressures within the staff team. What the care home could do better: The registered manager expressed her concern about maintaining high standards at all times which includes the presentation of the home to visitors and relatives coming to the house. This in part has led to the manager asking staff to work harder with cleaning duties. The service does not have any dedicated domestic staffing. The management team should monitor and review if necessary the domestic situation where staff undertake all the cleaning duties at the house. A review should consider whether or not staff have sufficient time to undertake both cleaning and care support duties. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: This unannounced random inspection was made by one inspector for the Care Quality Commission (CQC). We wanted to look at staffing levels at the home and the day to day management of the service. The Commission had been alerted to staff morale being low and that this has led to some movement in the staff team. A recent Annual Service Review (ASR) has been completed and the CQC annual service inspection plan had not been changed. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) had been completed and was used for the review along with surveys completed by staff and people living at the service that had been returned to the Commission (CQC). The visit was made at early afternoon to allow the inspector to meet a maximum number of staff on the shift changeover. At this visit there were eleven people living at the home and the manager reported having a full complement of staff. Five staff were on duty and the homes registered manager, nine people were at home and all were seen. There was some re decoration in progress in the hallway on the ground floor. The home was clean, fresh and tidy. People living at the home were seen in the communal areas, all looked well kempt. Two people were preparing to leave to take four days holiday at Butlins in Minehead with the support of two members of staff. The inspector was able to speak with these staff and all other staff who wanted to speak to her, time was spent with the homes registered manager. All staff impressed with their enthusiasm and were organised with their work. All interactions with people living at the service were kind, friendly and respectful. Records were sampled and the communal communications book was checked, entries made by the manager were seen and were discussed with her when feedback was given at the close of the visit. The visit was well received and the inspector would like to thank people living at the home and the staff and registered manager for their contribution to the inspection process.
