What the care home does well There are excellent arrangements in place for meeting the residents` social, recreational and religious needs. The staff display very high level of professionalism in the way the care for and interact with the residents. Staff show great deal of respect for the residents. Staff were observed to knock on bedroom doors before entry. The residents and visitors were very complementary of the staff, and of the good quality of care that they provide. Some of their comments include: "The care here is the best. You cant find that anywhere near here". "We have a lot of activities here". "My brother is well looked after, and he has settled well". "I can`t fault the staff here, they are excellent". "We couldn`t have chosen a better place". "They give us all the love and care that we need". What the care home could do better: The inspector advised the handyman to ensure that hot water sentinel taps should be maintained at the recommended level of 43 degrees centigrade instead of the current 40 degrees centigrade. The home provides personal care only and any health needs are dealt with by the Community Nursing Services. It is a large detached brick built house, which offers accommodation
Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home over 3 floors, as well having its own chapel and living accommodation for the Sisters. It stands within its own grounds, which are extensive and also feature a religious grotto with a range of seating being available that service users and their families can use. The physical standards of this home are in excess of the National Minimum Standards. There are strong community links with the services that they provide, which includes a day service and luncheon club. The Mother Superior who is the registered manager of the home. The registered manager is assisted by a team of Sisters all of who belong to the Order of the Little Sisters of The Poor and who are referred to as Sisters throughout this report. The home is situated at High Barnes, leading off from the Chester Road. A small thriving shopping centre is a short walking distance from the home. The shopping centre has a post office, chemist, local grocery shop, newsagent and public house. There is easy access to a bus service, which offers access into the City Centre where a range of services and shops can be accessed. A regular bus service operates from the front of the home. The scale of charges is GBP445.00 per week. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found:
The care plans for three residents were looked at to see how best the staff meet the individuals need. The care plans highlight individual care needs and the plans set out how the needs are to be met. There is supporting daily report records that show how the needs are being met on daily basis. The care plans include risk assessments including moving and handling, falls, nutrition and pressure area. There are records for each resident which relate to medical treatment from healthcare professionals, including GPs, Physiotherapists, District Nurses, chiropody and the Challenging Behavour team. The residents who were spoken with confirmed that their healthcare needs are met. The residents mentioned going to outpatient appointments, dentists, opticians and other healthcare facilities. All the 10 service user surveys were received by the Commission and in i, all the respondents (residents) stated that their health and personal care needs are fully met. The home has detailed policies on the storage and administration of medicines. These are followed by the senior staff who have overall responsibility for the administration of medicines in the home. A random check of the medicines administration system was undertaken by the inspector. There were no discrepancies noted. All the drugs administration records were appropriately maintained. The registered manager has long experience of managing a residential care home. She is supported by a deputy manager is also a registered nurse. There is good administrative support for the home, including personnel and accounts assistants. The organisation has a National Adviser who visits the home on a regular basis to undertake quality assurance checks include catering, medication system, accidents, complaints and servicing and maintenance, and a report is produced and recommendation are made where necessary for the manager to address. There are suitable arrangements for staff to receive one-to-one supervision from the manager. Staff records show that the manager has provided individual supervision to staff on regular basis. Staff commented that they find the supervision sessions useful. The organisations Health and Safety policies remain in place. These cover policy areas such as fire prevention and Care of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH). There is evidence that staff adhere to the policies as set by the company. Servicing records confirm that all portable appliances have been tested. A record is maintained of regular water temperature tests in the home. Regular servicing of fire equipment, passenger lift, bath lifts and hoists, gas and electrical appliances have been carried out by the contracted companies. However, the inspector noted from the records that hot water temperatures from sentinel taps have consistently been recorded for several months as being 40 degrees centigrade instead of the recommended 43 degrees centigrade to avoid any potential legionnela bacteria developing. The handyman was advised to address this with the servicing company.
