What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection on 27th August 2008. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was returned to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Responses to any surveys we sent out. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations including those who commission this service on behalf of social services clients. What other people have told us about the service. A telephone interview with the Registered Manager on 14th August 2009. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA was completed to a very high standard by the Registered Manager, and it stated that the following improvements have been made in the last 12 months: -A number of improvements have been made in the furnishings and decor including purchasing a large screen TV for the garden room, changing to linen tablecloths in the dining rooms, and purchasing more folding chairs for visitor seating in bedrooms. -Special therapeutic chairs have been purchased to allow bed bound residents to be wheeled outside, and to aid those with mobility problems, an automatic door has been fitted to the reception area. -The homes Statement of Purpose and residents handbook have been up-dated, as have all the policies and procedures. -Staff have received massage training for frail, bed bound residents. -The home has introduced moulded food which makes soft and pureed meals look more appetising. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 -Raised pots have been introduced to encourage residents to be more involved in gardening. -More staff have had training on the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and the Mental Capacity Act; new arrangements are in place for record keeping on this subject. -New infection control training has been introduced. -The fire alarm system has been upgraded. -The chapel has been redecorated, and the dementia unit lounge has been up-dated. -A training room is now available for staff training sessions. -An extra nursing sister has been employed Monday to Friday to improve continuity and communication on the nursing unit, and staff salaries have been regraded to take into account training and responsibilities. -A new staff handbook has been produced. -All policies and procedures have been up-dated. Surveys were sent out prior to this annual service review and 12 were returned to the Commission. Four of these were from service users who all ticked Always to the questions about whether they received the care and support they needed, and whether staff were available when needed. All four also agreed that staff Always listened to them and acted on what they said. A number of positive comments from residents and their families included: Cheerful staff and domestics. The home is clean and fresh. Great family atmosphere and very supportive of relatives. Lynwood is a wonderful place. Excellent care. Very good activities. Physiotherapy. I have been to many homes. This in my opinion is the best I have seen by far. Three staff surveys were returned and again a number of positive comments were received including: It is a very welcoming care home for residents and families. Varied and full programme of activities and entertainment and outings offered to all residents. Lynwood is a very nice place to work. I really enjoy going to work. The training that we receive is excellent and I also feel that Matron and Assistant Matron are always free to listen to any problems, ideas or suggestions that we have. Five surveys were returned from health and social care professionals, all of whom were very complimentary about the service provided at the home. All agreed that assessment arrangements either Always or Usually ensured accurate information was gathered on new residents, and that residents needs were monitored, reviewed and
Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 met. Comments included: The staff and management of the home have always been excellent Lynwood gives excellent care - the best I have seen in 11 years as a GP. Homely environment, and friendly efficient staff. Best residential home I have ever had to work with. Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and day centre is good. Good working relationship with the local authority. Efficient, well trained staff. Well reviewed by patients. They looked after my own relative well during a respite break. Several comments were noted on surveys from across the three groups, residents, staff and professionals, about how much the physiotherapy department is appreciated by residents. Lynwood has its own physiotherapy gym, staffed by qualified physiotherapists who assess all new residents and arrange a regular programme of activities for all those who wish to take part. The home has received two complaints in the last 12 months and both have now been satisfactorily concluded. No complaints have been received at the Commission about this service, and no Safeguarding Adults referrals have been made. At the last inspection it was noted that Lynwood offers excellent therapeutic activities, and the home is well managed and run in the best interests of residents. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will carry out an Annual Service Review by 26th August 2010, and a Key Inspection by 26th August 2011.
