What the care home does well Service users are treated with dignity and respect. Service users expressed their satisfaction of living at Mayott House, the care provided and the facilities available. The healthcare needs of service users are fully met. Service users can be confident that any complaints or concerns will be listened to, taken seriously and acted upon. Policies and procedures are in place to protect service users from abuse and neglect. Staff on duty were observed to be courteous and professional when carrying out their duties. Staff are well trained to carry out their duties with confidence. Twenty three of the thirty two care staff in post have completed/ nearing completing of national vocational qualification (NVQ). We gained the impression that there is a good rapport between service users, visitors and the staff team and that staff morale is good. Members of staff expressed their satisfaction of working in the home. What the care home could do better: Measures to prevent the potential risk of cross contamination and the spread of infection need to be more robust, as members of staff are manually cleaning commode pots. Following the inspection we received an action plan from the manager detailing action to be taken. The manager is advised to obtain a copy of the document " Infection Control in Care Homes 2006", which advises that commode pots/bedpans should be heat disinfected at 80oC for one minute. Advise can also be sought from the Health Protection Agency and/or Environmental Health Department. Random inspection report
