Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and results of other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? As required, the service returned the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. The assessment gave us the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the service is still providing a good service and is aware of further improvements they need to make. The last site visit to the service was carried out on 8 July 2008. The current rating was determined at that visit. We will do a key inspection by the 7 July 2010. The AQAA identified changes, which had been made as a result of listening to people who use the service including involving residents in the capital budget with regards to further garden and home improvement projects. And encouraging some residents to be involved in organisational projects such as Barchester in Bloom. The AQAA indicated a range of areas where improvements have been made in the last year. This includes being more proactive in reviewing and distributing the homes service user guide and welcome pack. Making information more readily available about the Care Aware Advocacy service. Appointing a temporary activities organiser, resulting in a better of range of activities and more physical activities. Indeed the organisation has developed a new initiative Fitness with Care in partnership with Help the Aged to promote active lifestyles and wellbeing within care home settings. The home now uses the Liverpool Care pathway model, which should ensure residents receive end of life care and support as per their individual assessed needs, wishes and preferences. A new Head Chef has been appointed. The Chef talks with residents to Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 find out what they like and dislike and menus are changed accordingly. The kitchen was inspected in October 2008 by the local Environmental Health department resulting in the home receiving the Clean Kitchen Award. Garden areas have been re landscaped providing a better area for residents. And wheelchair access to this area has been improved. We have registered the adjacent eight bedded Falcon Place, increasing the total registered bed numbers to 58. This unit is specifically for use of elderly people who have early onset dementia and personal care needs. Almost fifty percent of unqualified care staff are now trained to NVQ 2 care. A fire marshal is now in post and staff have received training on new fire regulations. A fire safety officer inspected the home in October 2008 and made one recommendation. The recommendation has been completed. There is also evidence from the AQAA that the service is continuing to look at ways of improving what they do to promote good outcomes for those receiving the service. This includes improving the homes relationship with other outside organisations. The home continues to improve menu choices to reflect what residents actually enjoy. For residents comfort the home will acquire more high profiling beds. Bedrooms will be redecorated as and when they become vacant. The ground floor corridor and reception area will be redecorated, recarpeted and refurbished. More care staff will undertake their NVQ 2 care training and an NVQ assessor will be appointed. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection that may have affected residents wellbeing and they have shown that they have managed issues well. The AQAA records the home has received three complaints during the last 12 months which were resolved within 28 days. The complaints were not upheld. On the 22 June 2009 we received an anonymous complaint. The person contacted us again on the 26 June 2009 with more information. We required the provider investigate the allegations using their complaints procedure. There has been one safeguarding referral but the matter was not investigated under the procedures as it was deemed not necessary. And our subsequent telephone conversation with the registered manager identified there have been no authorisation referrals made under the Deprivation of Liberties safeguards. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 7 July 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
