Northfield House is a large detached property located on the outskirts of Williton. Accommodation is provided on two levels. The home has ten bedrooms all have ensuite facilities. There are ground floor bedrooms and facilities for people who have the use of a wheelchair, including a bathroom with an overhead hoist and a walk-in shower. There are further bedrooms and a shower room and bathroom on the second floor. The extensive garden and patio areas of the home are beautifully presented. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked an information received and requested since the last inspection. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was well completed by the home and returned to the Commission within agreed timescales. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information. We sent surveys to a number of people using the service, staff and health care professionals to seek their views on the quality of the service provided. We received completed comment cards from 7 people using the service and 7 members of staff. The home keep us informed of any significant events at the home through the Regulation 37 notifications and make telephone contact with the Commission if they have any concerns or wish to share information. The Commission have not investigated any concerns about the service in the last twelve months. What has this told us about the service? This has told us that the home continue to provide good quality outcomes for people using the service and the home have systems in place to monitor and further improve the quality of the service provided. It told us that the home are proactive in seeking the views of people using the service, staff and other stakeholders and that they have made a number of changes and improvements based on what people have said. The AQAA told us that effective procedures are in place to ensure that anybody who is thinking about using the service is appropriately assessed. It told us that people are provided with information and opportunities to enable them to make an informed decision about using the service. Seven people using the service completed comment cards for the Commission and all confirmed that they had been asked if they wanted to move to the home and that they had received sufficient information about the home. It told us that people live in a comfortable and homely environment which has been suitably adapted to meet peoples needs. It told us that people have access to a range of aids and adaptations to assist with their mobility needs. It told us that people are able to personalise their bedrooms and that their views are sought for decor and furnishings in communal areas. The AQAA told us that peoples individual needs and choices are respected and that the home ensure that people have access to a wide range of health care professionals. The AQAA told us the home have been proactive in supporting individuals to become more involved in making their own professional and personal care appointments wherever possible. All seven people using the service confirmed that the home always enabled them to make choices about how they spend their day. Seven care staff completed comment cards for the Commission and six confirmed that they were always given up Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 to date information about the people they are caring for. One responded usually. Staff told us that the home were very good at supporting people to maintain and develop independent living skills. The AQAA told us that people are supported to access a wide range of social, vocational and educational events. Staff made the following comments; The home is a very social home with everyone getting out and about in the community and various activities, The home treat residents individually, taking them out on activities that each individual will enjoy, The home promotes independence through activities and daily living skills. One person using the service said, Northfield House is the best home and the staff are wonderful to help me with my independence. It told us that people know how to make a complaint and that they feel confident in doing so. The AQAA stated that Northfield has an open culture and that complaints are dealt with within the specified timescales. The AQAA also told us that the home provide robust procedures for responding to any suspicion or allegation of abuse. It told us that staff have received appropriate training in the protection of vulnerable adults and that up to date procedures are in place. It told us that staff receive a range of specialised training and that the home has plans to further develop staff training opportunities. Staff confirmed good training and support from the home. The AQAA told us that up to date procedures are in place to ensure the health and safety of people at the home. It told us that effective and stable management procedures are in place and that the registered manager continues to promote an open and inclusive style of management. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will carry out a key inspection by 30th November 2010. We can however inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or of the safety of people using the service.
