Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The last key inspection for this service was undertaken on 23rd October 2007. The last ASR was completed on 28th August 2008. The manager of the home returned the AQAA(annual quality assurance assessment) for the home within the timescale given, the information provided in the AQAA is comprehensive and identifies areas of the service that have changed and improved over the past year, and where further development is planned for the benefit of the people living in the home. The AQAA tells us information about the home is continually brought up to date and can be provided in a range of formats so that it is accessible to all service users. People moving into the home have their needs fully assessed before they are admitted.Survey forms from service users say that they were given enough information before they moved in,one person wrote that My son and daughter both thought it was the ideal place for me-it was!. The AQAA states that service users have person centred care plans that are developed following preadmission assessment and reviewed monthly.Health needs are well met and that a range of health care professionals are involved with service users who need their input, such as district nurses, chiropodists and GPs.Medication policies and procedures that are robust are in place and service users who wish to self medicate are supported to do so following assessment. The home has improved its medication auditing information. Surveys from service users and relatives say that the standard of care is good and staff Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 are respectful and caring.A relative commented that The staff are all very nice and caring to my mother----all her care needs are met and a service user wroteEvery staff member has always been helpful and considerate. Comments from health and social care professionals who sent in surveys include Provide an individualised service working with families and professionals to make holistic care plans and Very professional and well trained staff. The AQAA states that activities are provided for service users, there is an activity programme and an activities coordinator whose hours have been increased. The home hopes to further encourage links with the local community. The daily routines are flexible and independence and personal interests are encouraged and supported. There is choice of meals and no meal pre ordering, cultural and dietary needs are catered for and there is individual nutritional planning. One service user who returned a survey said that the food was plentiful and a relative said their relative in the home was well fed and as a result was more alert and stronger than they were before moving in. There is a complaints procedure, one concern received by the Commission was investigated by the home and a full satisfactory response was provided. The AQAA tells us that monthly complaint and safeguarding monitoring takes place. The home has safeguarding policies and procedures and demonstrates that it is pro active in raising concerns, it has raised four alerts during the past year none of which were directly related to the service. The AQAA says improvements to the environment include the redecoration, refurbishment and recarpeting of some bedrooms.Refurbishment of bathrooms, and changes to the reception area and offices. The gardens have been landscaped and are accessible. Comments on surveys regarding staff were positive examples are, From relatives-First class key workers,Lovely staff and always happy to take time out to discuss mum and her progress or care and Pleasant, patient staff are cheerful and caring. The AQAA says that a new recruitment procedure has been introduced and all new staff are vetted, there are staff meetings and staff receive regular supervision. No agency staff are used and care staff levels have been increased twenty four hours a day.The staff group is diverse and they are well trained, receiving core, specialist and NVQ training. Surveys from staff reflected that they were vetted before starting work, they received induction, feel well supported and are given enough information about the needs of people they support. Some comments on staff surveys in response to the question what does the home do well were, The home provides a very homely and friendly environment to work and live in.--Provides up to date a relevant training to staff to help them do their job effectively and efficiently and It does a lot,the home gives enough care and support to residents. A social care professional wrote, They offer a warm and friendly environment with consistency of staff, policy and procedures. The manager of the home has been in post since January 2009 and has stated their intent to apply to become the registered manager. The manager keeps the Commission informed of information regarding service users and the home as they are required to. Internal quality assurance takes place, the AQAA tells us that they welcome the views Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 of service users and others and regular questionnaires are circulated. There are monthly residents and relatives meetings and visits to the home by a representative of the provider (Regulation 26 visits) take place monthly.
