Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 7 What we found: This inspection was carried out by our pharmacist inspector and looked at all aspects of medicines management in the home. Medicines were stored securely and appropriate records kept. People who were prescribed medicines to be taken as required had clear guidelines to support staff when using these medicines. The records of administration were clear and detailed. We saw incidents of the involvement of healthcare professionals in peoples care and records of changes to medication and treatment. Two people have medicines given to them in food. One person had clear records of a multidisciplinary approach to this decision whereas the other one did not. During the inspection we discussed recent guidelines for the use of anti-coagulant medicines. The homes procedures were safe, but additional information from these guidelines were obtained at the time of the inspection so that all staff were aware of them. The home does not currently hold any controlled drugs, but a controlled drug cupboard should be acquired and securely fixed to the wall to enable any future prescribed controlled drugs to be stored legally. All staff who admnister medication have had training in the safe handling of medicines, their competency to carry out the task is assessed regularly by the manager. A procedure is available to all staff.
