Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how well the service has managed any concerns or complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report dated 12th June 2008. Relevant information received from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. We had a brief discussion with the Registered Manager to clarify points raised in the AQAA and to further update us. What has this told us about the service? This is the first annual service review of this home and was undertaken on the 11th June 2009. Ridgeway Manor was awarded a quality rating of good following the last key inspection of the service on the 12th June 2008. In preparation for this annual service review the home completed and returned their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. The document was informative and provided us with a good picture of what was actually happening in the home. It identified areas where the service had improved in the last year and others where further developments were being planned. It included evidence that the service regularly seeks the views of the people who live there to inform planning. For example, the manager records that as a direct result of listening to residents and their representatives they have improved access to the rear gardens by installing level pathways. This enables residents with poor mobility to access the grounds without having to use the steps. There has been some reorganization of residents accommodation in the home with people accommodated that require more care and support, offered rooms on the ground floor of the building. In addition, some of these rooms have direct access and pleasant views of the extensive gardens and surrounding woodland . The last inspection report was very positive about the service provided at the home. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 There were however some areas for improvement. Four good practice recommendations were made. The manager described in her AQAA how the issues identified had since been addressed and resolved. The AQAA records the homes refurbishment programme continues as planned. Areas of the home are being redecorated on a regular basis with residents continuing to have a say about the colours used. Some further bathrooms have been refurbished since the last inspection and the sunken terrace at the rear of the property has had the moss removed. The manager was aware this presented a slip hazard for people accessing the area. The front of the property has been jet washed to remove dirt from old stonework. The manager records that completed work has made the outside look clean and fresh. In addition, two new directional signs have been put up. One sign is just inside the grounds for visitors to see as they come along the drive. The other is in the local area and directs potential visitors to the entrance. Some people have reported difficulty in finding Ridgway Manor in the past. The home is sited in a quiet and very rural area of Surrey. Environmental improvements evidenced in the AQAA, ensure service users are provided with a safe, homely and attractive place to live. The home makes contact with the commission if there are any significant events that affect the well being of the people who live there. The home also has strategies in place to ensure that those who live there and those that visit can make their views and complaints known. In the last twelve months they have received one formal complaint. This matter is ongoing and has been responded to within timescale, using the homes published complaints procedure. Our records indicate that there have been no adult protection alerts in which the CQC has been involved in relation to this home. Evidence further shows that robust staff recruitment procedures are in place, which also ensure residents, are safe and protected from harm. Services that provide social care must be sensitive to people of different cultures, age, gender, faith and sexual orientation. Throughout the homes annual quality assurance assessment, it was clear that equality and diversity issues are promoted by the manager and incorporated within the service. The home takes the training and development of staff very seriously and looks for individuals who are able to undertake all aspects of mandatory training and prove competency at NVQ Level 2 or above. In discussion the manager stated they exceed the 50 standard required for trained staff on duty rosters, which further ensures they safeguard the welfare of residents. The manager spoke of her plans for accessing Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards training this year. This will ensure that both she and her staff are aware of new legislation and the good practice demands now placed upon them. The home continues to work well with us and have clearly evidenced that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to our current inspection plan. A key unannounced inspection will be undertaken of this service by the 12th June 2010. However, we can inspect at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
