Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: Suni Chotai, pharmacist inspector visited the service on 21.9.09 to assess the medicine management procedures. The Medicines are kept in a store room area with additional lockable metal grid for medicine. Storage temperature of medicine areas are not monitored to ensure that medicines are kept in their required storage conditions. The Medicine storage area is quite small to allow for a safe working environment. Medicine keys are in the office under double lock and not with the main responsible member of staff. This could be a risk to the safe keeping of medicines. A Controlled drugs cupboard and register is available. There were no controlled drugs in the service at the time and the cupboard was used to store other medicines. We were not able to assess whether this cupboard is attached to the wall in accordance with the law. We checked the medicines training certificate for staff. Several Staff had recent training on medicines. Six people manage there own medicines and the mini care plan did not have the required detail around this activity to enable staff to manage this in a consistent and safe way. We observed lunch time medicines being given and found good practice being followed. Medicine Administration Record [MAR] chart and care plan check showed that several people who were prescribed medicine to take only when needed did not have a care plan on its use. Several MAR charts were hand written and not initialed and dated. These were checked for accuracy and found to be correct. Staff must take responsibility for their work. One person had gone away for a few days and the medicine were managed well. There was no policy on this and staff would not be consistent when managing medicine when people are away from the service. The MAR had no profile and no photos. This is nessary for identification so that risk is minimised and the right people get their medidines.
