What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home returned the annual quality assessment (AQAA). It identified areas that have improved in the last year, and others where further developments are either planned or would benefit residents. This included evidence that the service seeks the views of residents and other stakeholders. The home last had a key inspection on the 25th September 2007. This is when the quality rating was assessed. A more recent random inspection was conducted on the 11th November 2008. This inspection identified that the home provides a caring and supportive environment for service users. There is a good range of activities available based on individual and collective needs. The staff team is enthusiastic and works positively with the service users, assisting them to communicate and develope greater levels of independence and confidence. The report indicated that the home recognises it should ensure its pre admission assessments are consistently adhered to so people admitted to the home can be sure there care needs can be met. Information supplied to the Commission in the AQAA tells us that improvements have been made in this area, and residents are benefitting from on-going consistent care planning reflecting assessed needs. The AQAA indicated a range of areas where improvements have been made in the last year, in particular the pre admission assessment process for prospective residents has been updated and improved, ensuring a person centred approach. The home has also updated individual residents risk assessments, and has made structural changes to enable wheelchair use in the home. Information read in the AQAA tells us that the home continues to enable and support residents to make choices and decisions about their lives. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 There is evidence from the AQAA that the service is continuing to look at ways of improving what they do to ensure good outcomes for those receiving a service. For example, the organisation has completed its restructuring, defining management of care and support, and management of finance and administration. Furthermore, a care and standards manager has been recruited to enable effective quality assurance systems. Structural and building work is continuing, thus improving accomodation for residents. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? There will be no change to the inspection plan, and the Commission will do a key inspection by 20th September 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
