Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last Key Inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) was sent out to the home; this was completed in detail and returned to us. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people who stay at Selwyn House. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys completed on behalf of people who use this service. What the home has told us about significant things that have happened, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The outcome of the last Key Inspection we carried out in October 2008. What has this told us about the service? The homes AQAA explains that they have systems in place to ensure the views of people who stay in the home, and those close to them, are promoted. Parents and carers are sent a questionnaire each year; peoples suggestions are acted upon wherever possible. Phone calls are made to families after people have returned home from their break at Selwyn House to see how their stay has gone and if there are any concerns: family members or carers can visit during peoples stays if they wish. The home told us they have made some improvements since our last visit; they now work with more health and social care professionals to ensure peoples needs are met, the environment has been improved, inconsistencies in peoples medication have been resolved and staff are clearer about using opportunities so that people are able to access the community. Nine members of staff have been supported to attain a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in the last year; some health and safety practices have been improved as each person now has their own emergency evacuation plan and moving and handling risk assessments have also been completed. We received seven surveys which were completed by peoples relatives. These told us that people are treated well by staff and that the people who work at the home listen to them and act on what they say. Some of the people who stay at the home have communication difficulties and people told us their likes, dislikes and routines are known to staff who work in the home. People said they know who to speak to if they are unhappy with the care and support provided at Selwyn House and that they know how to make a formal complaint should they need to. There have been no complaints made to the home in the last 12 months. Comments from relatives include: they look after my daughter very well, she knows all Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 the staff, [our son] always comes out clean and happy, [our daughter] is always eager to go on one of her visits to Selwyn House and they provide good home from home accommodation and a happy relaxing stay. When asked what they felt the home could do better, four people had the following suggestions: they need more staff when they have challenging clients, basic hygiene, make more beds available for respite care and they could do with transport of their own. Following the last Key Inspection we made these judgements about the quality of the service provided at Selwyn House: Choice of Home was rated as adequate; Individual Needs and Choices, Lifestyle, Personal and Healthcare Support, Concerns Complaints and Protection, Environment, Staffing and Conduct and Management of the Home were all rated as good. The overall rating of the home was 2 star. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last Key Inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who stay at Selwyn House. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We believe the home is maintaining the same standard of care and support we assessed during the last Key Inspection. We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do another Key Inspection by 21st October 2011. However we can inspect Selwyn House at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people who stay here.
