Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, which was carried out on 26th January 2009. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. Discussion with the registered manager. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The manager sent us the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It gave us clear information about what the service does well, areas where they have improved and plans for future development. The AQAA gave us information about how people using the service are safeguarded. For example, new staff go through a robust selection and recruitment process to ensure that they are suitable to work at the home. Induction training meets the standards of the national training organisation and staff have good opportunities for ongoing training and development. This helps to ensure that staff have the necessary knowledge and skills to support people living at Springdale. The AQAA told us how the views of people using the service were sought and gave examples of changes they had made as a result of listening and responding to those views. The AQAA outlined some of the improvements the service have made since our last inspection. For example, better communication with people using the service with the introduction of the Residents Forum. The AQAA also told us about some of the plans for the next year, most of which focus on improving the quality of care of people living at Springdale. For example, they plan to introduce person centred medication, which should help to give people more flexibility in their daily routines. Four people who use the service returned our surveys. They gave positive responses to our questions. For example, everyone indicated that they always received the care and support they needed and that staff made sure they received medical care if they needed it. Several people made positive comments about the manager and staff team. One person wrote, They always communicate what is happening and they are always polite and courteous. Another commented, I am quite happy here, everyone is very kind, it is a nice place to be. When asked what the home could do better, one person commented that there were not enough suitable activities. We noted from the AQAA Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 that there had already been some improvements in this area but the manager stated she was planning to improve the level of activities even further. Staff who completed our surveys indicated that they were supported by their manager, received appropriate training and had good systems of communication. They all felt they had the support, experience and knowledge to meet the different needs of people using the service. One member of staff wrote, Good systems of working are in place and we work to them ... I would be happy if my mum or dad lived here. When asked what the home could do better one member of staff wrote that the building was old and needed some renovation, although they also acknowledged that this could be very disruptive to residents. We noted from the AQAA that there were no immediate plans to replace the windows or upgrade the lift. However, a number of areas of the home had been redecorated and had new furnishings, which helps to improve the physical comfort of people living at the home. There were other improvements planned over the next year. Information in the AQAA indicated that the service had a robust complaints procedure and that one of the areas the service had improved upon was responding to and resolving complaints at the first level. The AQAA showed that there were four complaints in the past year, three of which had been resolved within the agreed timescale. The Commission had not received any complaints about the home. The manager continues to work well with us and sends in important information. From all the information we have received we have concluded that the service is well managed and continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Under the Care Quality Commission current inspection frequencies we must carry out a key inspection within three years of the last key inspection. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
