What the care home does well We found that the receipt of medicines into the home and the disposal of medicines are recorded. Controlled drugs are recorded accurately and stored in a cupboard that complies with the law. We saw that medicines were administered to people at lunchtime in a polite, friendly and safe way. What the care home could do better: There were no records of assessments of whether staff understood the medicines training they had attended and could handle medicines safely. Written guidelines (protocols) were not available to help staff decide when to give medicines prescribed to be taken `when required`. The registration allows for up to 10 people between the ages of 50- 65yrs to be accommodated. The purpose built home is split into two separate nursing units, Garden and Assisi, and a residential care unit, Robin. There are lounge and dining areas in each of the units which are comfortable and suitably furnished to cater for the people living there. There is a hairdressing salon in the home and the hairdresser visits twice a week. Sited in an established residential area the home has sufficient car parking and a well maintained garden. All areas of the home were accessible to service users. The fee range is from £356.00 to £807.00 per week including the nurse determination fee. One to one support can be provided where there is an assessed need but this does incur further costs and is currently £1.071.27 per week. The Registration Certificate is prominently displayed in the entrance area of the home, together with copies of the Service User Guide, Statement of Purpose, the complaints procedure and daily menus. A copy of the last Key Inspection that took place on the 4th November 2008, can also be found in the entrance of the home and on the web site for the Care Quality Commission. 0 4 1 1 2 0 0 8 Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: During the inspection we looked at the arrangements for recording and storing medicines, and the records of care belonging to two people. We asked about the medicines training that staff have received and watched medicines being administered to some people at lunchtime. We looked at medicine charts and found that administration records were completed. A running stock balance is recorded for medicines not supplied in blisterpacks. A small sample of tablets were counted by the inspector; the amounts matched the records on the medicine charts. Written guidelines (protocols) were not available to help staff decide when to give medicines prescribed to be taken when required. We found that the receipt of medicines into the home and the disposal of medicines are recorded. Controlled drugs are recorded accurately and stored in a cupboard that complies with the law. We saw that other medicines are also stored securely. However, the temperature in the room where medicines are kept was the maximum recommended for storing medicines. Temperature records for the medicine fridge showed that the fridge temperature was sometimes above the upper limit of 8 degrees centigrade. We were told that care plans for people living in the home are being improved and updated. We looked at the care plans of two people with different medical needs. We found that one care plan described the care required due to this need but the other plan did not. We found that all staff have attended medicines training since January 2009. However, there were no records of assessments of whether staff understood the training and could handle medicines safely. We saw that medicines were administered to people at lunchtime in a polite, friendly and safe way.
