What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. The AQAA identified that recent improvements have included completing a Mental Capacity Act assessment for anyone wishing to move into the home, liaising with health care professionals to improve service provision and appointing an activities coordinator to promote activities that provide mental stimulation. The AQAA identified the service planned over the next 12 months to continue development and understanding of dementia and related behaviour to continuously raise our standards of care for individual outcomes. The service also wished to continue development of staff understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and safeguarding of clients. The AQAA recorded the service had not received any complaints from people who use the service in the last 12 months and the management demonstrated they were able to work with Adult Services to safeguard people who use the service. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the service is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. We sent six surveys to people living in the service and received six back. Comments made in these surveys showed us people were happy living there. They said they always or usually received the care and support they needed and knew how to make complaints if they were not happy about anything. One person said They look after us well and I am quite happy with the service. Another commented the service provides a good home for me, clean and comfortable, not too regimental and my family always Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 made very welccome. A third person felt the home was clean and provided a friendly atmosphere, with a caring attitude to clients. They also thought there were approachable staff - particularly with concerns. This person did feel the laundry service could be improved. People felt there were plenty of activities offered and that the food was good. We also send four staff surveys to the service for the registered manager to give to staff. We received four of these back. The comments made showed staff enjoyed working in the home and felt they were offered training and support that enabled them to do their job well, although some felt they would like more staff meetings and a little more support from management. Comments made in response to the question What does the home do well? included training, support to residents and family. Have a friendly atmosphere, well decorated, keeping staff up to date, very clean and tidy, organise activities. Another commented the home provided excellent dementia care and gave staff up to date training. A third person commented we respect the dignity of the residents. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 11th November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
