Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We undertook an unannounced site visit to the home to check compliance with current regulation and future compliance with the Health and Social Care Act 2008. The last inspection found areas of concern and the home was rated as a adequate service. There were three serious complaints at the beginning of the year. The previous manager has since left and been replaced by an experienced manager with a background in intensive care nursing. The site visit included a tour of the building, discussion with the new manager, discussion with the proprietor, informal discussion with staff, district nurse and residents. The tour of the building evidenced that previous concerns regarding hygiene have been addressed, the home was clean and fresh. The atmosphere in the home on the day of the inspection was one of calm, friendly and a warm homely atmosphere. The manager took time to speak to individual residents on our tour and had a good rapport with residents and staff. Previous concerns as to the reception area and lack of security have also been addressed, with the reception area now welcoming and businesslike. All visitors sign in and out, staff have been trained to ask who visitors are and ensure they are taken to the person they have come to see. Documentation inspected showed a marked improvement with a new system of recording information in a person friendly manner. Past historys and likes and dislikes are recorded and incorporated into the care plan. The manager addressed the three complaints in retrospect to the satisfaction of the complainant who commented The change in the whole care home was amazing. The home have worked hard to turn everything around and have certainly succeeded. The stench has disappeared and everywhere is clean and tidy. All patients look happy and cared for . During the inspection progress was underway for a party on Saturday night and the home is now busy with entertainment, activities and outings. The manager has achieved a lot in the short time she has been in post, she is positive about the staff team she has and sees herself in post for some time. She is well supported by senior managers and the proprietor, as evidenced during the visit. This home is benefiting from the appointment of an experienced enthusiastic manager who has high standards for herself and staff and a high regard for the well-being of her residents. In discussion with the proprietor he was confident that the home would declare full compliance with all 16 outcomes of the Health and Social Care Act 2008.
