Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from health care professionals. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations . What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) within the timescale requested. Information about what the service does well, what they could do better and their plans for improvement were completed fully. Statistical information was also received. It is clear that the home continues to provide a good service and they know what further improvements they need to make. The homes registered manager has resigned and the registered provider has stated her intentions to manage the home. She has started the registration process with the Commission. Surveys were received from seven people using the service and two health and social care professionals. All of the comments received were complimentary and included the following: This is an excellent home and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a care home for an elderly relative. The home tries to cater for the residents likes and dislikes. The staff are very kind and caring to residents and visitors alike. The food at meal times is good. The staff are very good and the home is very comfortable. Two health and social care professionals responded to the Commissions survey and they said that the home usually responds to the diverse needs of people using the service. One respondent said that the home has excellent communication with health care professionals. The AQAA informed that as a result of listening to people using the service the home has put up an activities board in the lounge to keep people informed about what activities are due to take place. Outside entertainers visit the home, such as organ players, children from local schools put on shows. A pet as therapy (PAT) dog visits the home and yoga classes are facilitated. The AQAA stated that the activity organiser had undertaken an activity training course. As a result people are keen to take part in organised activities. The home has arranged more outside activities for people to participate in such as garden fetes, tea parties and visiting garden centres. The homes barriers to improvement have been that it has experienced difficulty attracting staff who meet the job specification to a caring profession. It has placed numerous adverts and received many responses, which have not materialised. The home has tried to overcome these barriers by placing adverts in different newspapers, local shop windows and the local job centre. It has also approached a recruitment agency to assist in recruiting the right caliber of staff. Staff wages have been increased Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 and enhanced rates for weekends and bank holidays have been introduced. The home has not had any safeguarding referrals within the last twelve months. The AQAA informed that the home promotes equality and diversity. For example, people are encouraged to choose their own clothes and their sexuality is encouraged. A hairdresser visits the home weekly. Newspapers, books magazines, (listening books for hearing impaired and Braille for visually impaired) are made available for those who wish to use that service. The home employs a diverse staff team although the current people using the service are predominantly British. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by October 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
