What the care home does well The Management and Staff of the home have a difficult task in balancing the independence of the young people who live in this home while ensuring their safety. We found that they are successful in balancing this risk and promoting independence of the residents. Residents are encouraged where possible to have an active social life and social contact outside the home. An example of this is that all residents are encouraged to choose a hairdresser outside the home and they are escorted by a staff member on their visit. The home has transportation for the residents but is aware that this needs to be extended and they told us that they have plans to do this by encouraging more staff to take on the role as driver. In the past year the home has maintained it preferred provider status with the MS society and improved relationships with the Huntington`s Society. The home maintains a good environment through investing in refurbishment and having an ongoing maintenance plan. The home has a training programme on line that all staff can access at any time. We were told that this is very successful with a very high proportion of staff using the programme. The home is managed in an open and transparent manner. The manager has kept us informed of any serious incidents in the home and she has followed the appropriate safeguarding procedures. This is what some of the residents told us about living at the Priory: `they attend to all my needs` `the staff are kind and will do anything for you` `the food is very good, I like the bb-qs best`. Staff told us `I enjoy looking after the residents and empowering them by giving them as much choice as possible`. We found the health and welfare of the residents to be of a good standard with good infection control measures in place. We tasted the lunch and found it to be of good appearance and to be tasty. Residents told us that the food is good and that there are always choices on offer should they not like the main course. Staff told us that they felt well supported and that if they had a problem they would talk to the manager. What the care home could do better: Some of the resident we spoke with told us that staff tell them when they are very busy. The residents told us that they don`t like this and feel that they cannot always ask for their needs to be met. We fed this back to the manager who assured us she wouldaddress this issue straight away. Random inspection report
