It is owned by The Priory of England and the Order of St. John, and was initially set up in 1947 by five members of the local St. John Ambulance division. It is a Royal Charter Home, with charitable status, and is therefore a non-profit making business. It is run by a management committee, who meet quarterly. Accommodation is provided on two floors, with a Annual Service Review Page 2 of 6 2 9 0 8 2 0 0 8 stair lift to the first floor. There are lounges on both floors, and the one on the first floor has a view across the harbour and the sea. There are sixteen single bedrooms, and one shared. Many of the rooms are quite small, but they have been carefully furnished, allowing space for necessary nursing equipment. All bedrooms are fitted with telephone points and a call bell system. The home has gardens to the front and the side of the property, which have been paved for easy wheelchair access. They are enhanced by flower beds and tubs, and provide an attractive area to sit in good weather. The home can easily be accessed by public transport, and by road. On road car parking is available. The fees are set at £469.98 per week. This information was provided by the manager on pre-inspection documentation in October 2006. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included the following, The annual quality assurance assessment AQAA that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a selfassessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. A telephone conversation with the manager. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. At the last inspection there were no requirements made and only 3 areas noted for improvement, these were to ensure the medication policy is updated, that evidence of ongoing adult protection training be kept and that a system for ensuring NMC pin numbers are up to date be developed. The manager confirmed that the medication policy along with all the policies is being reviewed currently. All staff have received training in adult protection and the manager checks the NMC Pin numbers for nursing staff every 6 months and this is recorded. People living in the home always tell us that they are happy there. They are particularly pleased with the food and the activities on offer, and how they are treated by the staff. We received comments from staff, health care professionals, and social care professionals who visit the home, and from relatives and advocates. All continue to be very satisfied with the quality of the care. Some of the comments from relatives were, each and every worker from the carers to the matron should be applauded for their remarkable devotion and compassion, the love and care given to the residents at St John home is superb, my (relative) is treated with respect, kindness and loving care Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Health care professionals commented nursing care is outstanding, there is a family feel in the home with excellent staff to resident relations. Social care professionals commented I visit several homes and this one stands out as far superior, the home provides excellent nursing and social care, the staff are well informed and appear devoted to providing a caring service. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 29th August 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
