What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection which was in November 2008. This included: three surveys returned to us by people using the service, four surveys from staff who work at the service and a survey from a health/social care professional. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications, and are a legal requirement. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. Information provided in the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment - AQAA - which the Manager completed and returned to us. What has this told us about the service? The responses in the residents surveys are positive, they all state that they are able to make decisions about how they spend their time and that the staff treat them well. They all know how to make a complaint if they need to. Additional comments were made such as: they respect my opinion and choices, they give me privacy, we go out places. The staff surveys included positive comments about the standard of care provided to the residents and that there is a homely atmosphere in the Home. Comments were made in both staff and residents surveys about the need for more staff, particularly drivers, to facilitate more activities. Within the AQAA it states that improvements have been made to the care plans and that they are written in a more person centred way now. The staff surveys state that they receive good information about the needs of the residents. The survey from the health/social care professional states that staff ask for advice when needed and act upon it. The AQAA includes many examples of how individual residents have been supported to make their own decisions about their lifestyle and care that is provided. There are also examples of how individuals have been supported to develop their independence. According to the AQAA the requirements made at the last Inspection with regard to the environment have been met. New flooring has been provided and several areas of the Home have been redecorated. A new kitchen has been installed and overall, the environment is more homely. The AQAA states that the organisation continue to recruit new staff following appropriate procedures and that staff receive ongoing training and supervision. It states that the role of the senior staff has been clarified so that all are clear about their responsibilities. The staff surveys confirm that they receive training and supervision although there is a comment on one that suggests that there needs to be additional Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 training for staff. The AQAA describes the arrangements in place for managing the Home. A new deputy manager has been appointed since the last Inspection. An on call system is in place to provide support and guidance to staff out of hours. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue with our plan to carry out an Inspection at the Home as per the Commissions current procedures. However, we can carry out an Inspection at any time if we have concerns about the welfare of the residents. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
