What the care home does well Staff showed a good understanding of the needs of the people in their care. There were good records which showed all of the care needs of people living at the home. The care plans were person centred and reflected the needs of the people living at the home. There was evidence of people being encouraged to make decisions and choices in all areas of daily living. All of the people living at the home looked clean and well cared for. People wore clean,matching and appropriate clothes. Most of the female residents wore jewellery and make up. There was good standard of hygiene. All areas of the home were clean and tidy. Complaints and safeguarding issues were properly recorded. These had been reported to the appropriate authorities,including CQC. A recent complaint had been investigated and resolved. Staff have received training and guidance in the management of complaints and the recognition and management of abuse. The provider`s representative has carried out a series of monitoring visits within the home. The provider is required under regulation 26 to produce a report of these monitoring visits. Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 7 Date of last inspection Brief description of the care home Valley View provides personal care for up to 40 people, many of who have a dementia type illness. Nursing care cannot be provided but district nursing services can be used as required. This is a purpose built care home and accommodation comprises of 40 single bedrooms on the ground floor level, all with en-suite facilities and located along two main corridors. Each corridor has its own dining room, toilets and bathrooms. There is a separate hairdressing facility, kitchen, laundry area and staff room. At the back of the home is an enclosed well kept garden, which can be easily used by the residents. Car parking facilities are located to the front of the home. Local shops and other community amenities are within a short walking distance and the city centre of Sunderland, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring are accessible by public transport. The last key inspection of the home judged it was operating at a good level. This unannounced inspection on May 25 was carried out to see if the home was still operating at a good level. Before the visit we looked at information we received since the last visit to the home. This includes how the service dealt with any complaints and changes to how the home is run. During the visit we talked with people who use the service,a relative,some staff and the manager. Following the inspection feedback was given to the manager.
