Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection which was undertaken on 15th December 2008 this included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and detailed and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information provided, and at the feedback provided in the surveys that were returned by the staff team, and people that use the service. Our judgement is that the service is still providing good outcomes for the people that use the service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The information provided, told us that the service has received no complaints within the last twelve months, and they have not had any safeguarding incidents. The service told us in the information provided, how they ensure each person is assessed, and has a detailed care plan developed in consultation with them, before the service is provided. This ensures the staff members know how people want to be supported. They told us they offer support and guidance to people in a sensitive manner, in order to support daily living skills. They said they provide a flexible service catering for individuals needs. People have access to advocacy services in order to discuss any issues they may have, and to provide feedback about the service provided. They told us they respect and support peoples wishes to develop social skills, confidence and self esteem. They said they promote social inclusion, and encourage individuals to engage in a range of activities of their choice. They told us they offer a homely, user friendly environment, and support individuals development, and skills in a non- institutional style. The Registered Manager told us in the information provided, that all staff receive an induction following their employment and on-going training. This ensures the staff have Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 the skills and knowledge for their role. All staff are also encouraged to undertake a National Vocational training course, in order to develop their skills further. We sent out surveys to people, that use this service and seven were returned. In the feedback they told us; they were involved in the decision to use this service and have a care plan in place, which tells the staff what support they want. They told us the staff work in a respectful and dignified way. They said they felt listened to by both the manager and the staff team, and they are aware of how to complain should they need to. The following comments were made: The staff are friendly and I have never had a bad meal. The home is very clean and the food is ok. Everything here is good, fine and well established. I appreciate everything about this place in numerous ways. We have good co-ordination of both the staff and service users as an integrated team. We live in a well maintained environment, and I always feel at home here. I am happy working towards living independently, and the staff give me support with this. The staff care for us. I am happy here and feel supported. It is a happy house and we have nice food. People told us about areas in which they thought the service could improve upon. These comments included: To improve the food we have. More outings. We sent out surveys to the staff team and we had five returned. In the feedback they told us, they are provided with the required information in order to meet peoples assessed needs. They were recruited in accordance with the legal requirements to ensure people using the service are protected. They told us they had an induction, and receive on-going training opportunities to enable them to have the skills and knowledge for their role. They said they felt supported by their manager. The staff members made the following comments about the service and what it does well: We offer a welcoming atmosphere to people and their guests and we cater well for peoples dietary requirements. We are a well organised, friendly, non judgemental service that give choices and listen to what people want. We provide a homely and safe environment for people. We meet the needs of people in a house that is beautifully furnished, clean and warm. Each person has their own bedroom and has privacy. They are given independence and encouraged to do activities and follow their own interests with staff support if needed. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We cater to the needs of the people we support and maintain a high quality of hygiene. The home is very friendly and provides a nice comfortable atmosphere for people and staff. We provide well balanced and varied meals to suit individuals needs. All people are supported in everyday living, and help is always there if people need it. We encourage people to participant in activities and encourage a healthy lifestyle. I think this is a great place and I enjoy coming to work. The staff made the following comments about how the service could be improved. The handover of information. More staff at certain times so we can take people out more to the cinema or bowling. At present we work by ourselves, so we cannot leave the house especially in the evenings. During the summer it would be nice to be able to support people to go out for a walk etc in the evenings. Sometimes the evening supper choices are a bit repetitive. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The next inspection of this service will be based on the Fees and Frequency Regulations 2007 and the assessment of risk of the service. Further clarity will become evident as the new registration and inspection system under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 is confirmed. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
