Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment, or AQAA that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. We received completed surveys from four of the 29 people living in the home. We have been told some people have needed help from their relatives to complete them. Three people told us they always get the care and support they need, whilst one person said this is usually the case. Two people told us they always get the medical care they need whilst two people told us this is usually the case. One person told us there are always staff staff available when they need them, whilst three people said this is usually the case. One person told us they always like the meals provided, whilst two residents told us they usually like the food provided. One resident told us they only sometimes like the food provided. Comments made in surveys are mainly positive about the care and services provided by the home. One comment was, I consider that the conditions are generally good at Walstead Place. I do not believe that they do anything especially well. The staff generally are attentive and deal with normal requirements without undue delay Another person commented, The home provides a comfortable safe environment with caring staff. When asked about what the home could do better, a third person commented, Slow service in dining room. Meals take up to an hour with 20 minutes between courses. Staff change shift during first course. A summary of our findings of our last inspection in March 2009 is as follows, What the care home does well, Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 Prospective residents are provided with good information about the home to help them decide if they want to move there. The needs of prospective residents are thoroughly assessed before they are admitted. This means prospective residents know that their needs will be met by the care home. Care plans are drawn up for each resident using the information gathered by assessing residents needs. Care plans are also regularly reviewed. This means that up to date information is available to staff so they know what action they are expected to take to ensure residents health, personal and social care needs have been met. Routines in the care home are flexible and support residents in their daily life. This means residents can exercise choice and control over their lives. A programme of activities is provided each week for residents to enjoy. Staff are available in sufficient numbers to meet the needs of residents. Staff have received appropriate training which gives them the knowledge and skills to provide good quality care to residents. They have also been well supported by the manager. The care home has been well managed and has been run with the best interests of residents in mind. What has improved since the last inspection, Care plans have been drawn up using a consistent format. They include clear information for staff to follow so that they know what action they should take to ensure residents needs have been met. What the care could do better, Some armchairs are no longer suitable for residents needs. Some parts of the premises would benefit by refurbishment. For example some residents would find showers instead of baths easier to use. We have been informed that the providers will be subjecting the care home to major refurbishment over the coming year. Plans include replacement of furniture and upgrading bathrooms. Some residents would benefit from a visiting library service. This would means that residents who cannot get out can either order books or choose from a selection left in the care home by the service. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 4th March 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
