If yes, what have they been: Date of last key inspection: Date of last annual service review (if applicable): Brief description of the service Westhorpe Hall is a listed country manor house set in its own grounds and in the village of Westhorpe. It has much character, and has been converted to provide longterm residential care for up to 21 older people. The house is approached by a private drive that crosses an ancient moat. There is car parking and gardens that are accessible to the residents. The main house offers accommodation on the ground and first floor, with a modern single storey extension to one side. A wood-burning stove had recently been installed in the main lounge, replacing the open fire. The first floor is served by two staircases, both fitted with stair lifts, to two separate wings. The remaining bedrooms are on this level. In total there are 15 single bedrooms and 3 doubles; one of the doubles is being used as a single room. Four of the single rooms are less than ten square metres in size, and one of the double rooms is just Annual Service Review Page 2 of 6 2 7 0 2 2 0 0 9 under sixteen square metres. The revisions to care standards make these rooms sizes acceptable, on the basis that these facilities were registered before the NCSC came into being. On the first floor of the home, there are several changes of floor level, which have to be negotiated, and a number of doorways have raised lips. This poses some limitations on the needs they can meet in terms of residents mobility. Fees for the home are between £355 and £550 per week, people should ask the manager for current fees. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The last time we carried out a key inspection at Westhorpe Hall was on 27th February 2009. We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review, which included the annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people living in the home. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We also asked people what they thought of the home, previous to this annual service review we sent surveys to people living there and other people with an interest in Westhorpe Hall; staff members, social workers, doctors and other professionals who visit the home. We checked our records for information we have about how the service has managed any complaints it gets and looked at what the home has told us about things that have happened there, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. We also had a look at the previous key inspection report and the results of any other visits that we may have made to the service in the last 12 months and took into account any other relevant information that people or any other organisations had shared with us since the last inspection. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. We sent surveys to the people living in the home, their families, some of the staff members and other professionals involved with the home. We got a very good response, fourteen residents, seven staff members and three professionals returned theirs, including a doctor and a someone in the community care practise team. People told us that they like living at Westhorpe Hall, one person said, They show care and kindness to residents at all times....I cannot fault them at all. Another person, said, The home is always warm and bells are answered promptly. One family member told us, They are very good at keeping contact with relatives if they have any concerns. There are excellent activities and they try to involve everyone. Another person said, The staff are always excellent, always kind and helpful. Most comments about the food were good, however someone who has vegetarian meals said that they would like more variety in what they are offered and another person said that the meals are sometimes cold. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 One staff members answer to the question what does the service do well was, We try to offer a home from home. Another staff member said, It is a very friendly and happy home and makes people very welcome. We received a survey from a doctor who visits the home, the comments were also positive, They provide excellent care, I have nothing negative to say about them. Another professional caller said, Staff are responsive to the residents needs, there is a homely atmosphere. We have received an anonymous complaint about this home since the last inspection, which we asked them to investigate, it was managed quickly, effectively and within their complaints procedure. The manager told us in the AQAA that they have dealt with any complaints made to them to the satisfaction of the person making the complaint and that, We are aware of how important it is to listen to the views of the service users, I operate an open door service for all staff, service users, families and friends so people can share their thoughts. Information given to us indicates that this home continues to provide care that is person centred and the AQAA tells us that they always write care plans only after a full assessment and that they are reviewed regularly. The AQAA also told us about some of the improvements they have made to the home, We have changed our menu, we now have a fixed two week menu, which was discussed with the service users, the cook has now included some of their favourite meals The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last visit and they have shown that they have managed issues effectively. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 27th February 2012. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
